His strong heart froze inside as he opened the cold storage of the

Alla Casa restaurant.

Chas and Joan Kale were safely out of his way, so Gene could find his

clever DI, Alex Drake, not only his partner on the force but also his fascinating

friend.

The sight of her on the floor felt like a hard kick in the gut; she

was tied up and gagged. She had been tired and pale all night, and at

first sight he knew that this could surely kill her.

The cold air caught his breath and for a second he thought of Sam, the

friend he had lost, as the smell of animal carcasses invaded his

brain.

Gene crouched beside her, and she greeted him with wide, terrified green

eyes that stared at him. He watched a tear slide down into her hair,

as she closed her eyes and seemed to fade. He gently brushed the tear

away, startled by the feel of her cold, cold skin. Hunt's steady

copper's hands removed the gag and untied her hands (wrists), though inside he

trembled. He felt her very light pulse, left the rope tied to her

ankles, and scooped her up in to his arms.

"It's okay, Bolly," he whispered, lightly kissing the top of her curly head.

She grew heavy in his arms and his heart skipped a beat; Gene knew that

death was close, and moved fast to the plush red sofa, ripping open

her blouse.

"I've bloody dreamt of doing this," he told her.

He had. It was a dream that left him reaching for his whiskey bottle

in a cold sweat of fear, and he hadn't slept since.

Now he couldn't careless about her bra, she was as white as a sheet. He

had to fight and fight and fight with his lion heart, which roared him into

action and he refused to be defeated.

"Don't you dare," he roared as he pumped her chest. And Gene knew right

then, that if he failed his heart would break.

He moved to breath life into her and she awoke to a face filled with fear

and concern that watched her, stared at her. His hand on her throat

was counting every beat of life flowing through her, and it shocked her ever so

slightly.

Gene was delighted to feel her cold hand on his jaw, as warmth

returned to her eyes. He vaguely listened to her jabbering on about

"saving them." This strange and beautiful woman was concussed and he

inwardly winced at the feel of the cut on her head.

Quickly he untied her feet and took off his coat. Then he sat her up; Gene

knew letting her sleep would be fatal. He wrapped his thick, heavy

coat around her shoulders and she weakly curled into his arms. He took

out his hip flask and put it to her lips.

"Bugger the time," he said as he saw the

morning light outside, "drink it down, Alex."

Gene rubbed her arms and helped Alex to her feet, she stumbled but he

made her stand, made her wake up more fully.

As the colour returned to her pretty face, Gene started to rage about

the bastard scumbag that was Kale, When she told him to nick Joan Kale

too, he secretly smiled because he knew she would be just fine.

Later in the kitchen, he teased her with sarcasm (sarcastically) while Shaz Granger

patched her up but as he gave her something to eat, he knew that he

was proud of his DI for the work she had done that night and for

her bravery that went far beyond his expectations of her.
