"Come on Jaime! It's the perfect snow day," his sister called as she ran down the front steps of their house. "You're going to miss all the fun!"
"Fun is certainly what you do best, Jack," Jaime said to himself as he pulled this old hat down on his head. Even several years later, at the age of fourteen, Jaime still believed in all of the guardians. It was getting harder and harder every day, though. Jamie had not seen Jack Frost in years, and he was starting to think that maybe he had dreamed him up as well as the others.
Sophie held up her pair of ice skates. " Can we pleeease go ice skating?"
Jaime couldn't say no to his little sister. "Alright, just as long as we be careful, like Mom said."
"Yayyyyyyy!" the seven year old shouted and ran off towards the direction of the pond.
"Soph, wait up" Jaime grabbed his skates and chased after her. As he ran through the town he passed the water fountain that always froze at the most inconvenient times and the statue that had finally put an end to his sled ride all those years ago. After a few minutes, he reached the frozen pond.
Jaime searched for Sophie as he wove his way through the trees surrounding the two sibling's favorite place for skating. "Sophie, don't go on the ice yet. We have to make sure it's thick e-" The last word was interrupted by a shriek.
Jaime raced towards the noise to find his sister standing perfectly still in the middle of the pond, the ice cracking beneath her.
"Jaime… I'm scared." Her voice trembled.
"I know, I know." Jaime slowly started to cross the ice to his sister. "But you're going to be alright; you're not going to fall in." The words came quickly to him, as if he had said them before. The boy looked at his sister. If he was going to get her to safety, he had to find a way to keep her calm. Suddenly, Jaime remembered what an old friend had once told him. "We're going to have a little fun instead." He said reassuringly to his sister.
"No we're not," Sophie cried. Tears started to form in her eyes.
I promise… I promise you're… you're gonna be fine. You have to believe in me." Jaime lightened the tone of his voice. "You wanna play a game? We're going to play hopscotch, like we do everyday. When I say the number you hop, ok. You can do it."
"One"-Sophie took a tiny step towards her brother. "Two"-This time she managed a small jump. "Three"-Jaime grabbed her hand and pulled her far away from where he and the cracking ice were.
In the excitement of saving his sister, he failed to notice the breaking of the pond beneath him. Before anything could be done, the ice gave out from underneath him.
As he fell into the freezing water, Jamie heard his sister shout his name. Then, everything started to turn dark. This is it, he thought. At least she's safe. What happened next surprised Jaime. He felt arms around him, as if he were being carried. He began to go back up to the hole in the pond where he had fallen through. Within seconds he was on top of the ice, gasping for breath.
Sophie rushed to his side. "Jaime! You're ok! But how?"
"I… I don't know." Jamie lied.
"Well it doesn't really matter," said his sister. I'm just glad you're safe. Let's go home."
Jaime stood up and took a few steps towards his sister, before turning around. He smiled at the white-haired boy and whispered, "Thank you."
