The Way Home
Prologue
Hi there! I'm Eugene Fitzherbert, and this is the story of how I found my family. It's also about a girl named Rapunzel, who's my best friend. She comes in a little later. But, I guess this is really both our story. Stories? Would that be one or two stories since we're both… Ah, whatever.
Anyway, my story starts when I was born. Well, yeah, everybody's story starts that way, but you get the drift. See, I don't know who my mom and dad are, or what happened to them. The headmistress of the orphanage said they found me on the stoop one night and took me in.
I've lived at St. Joan's Orphanage for as long as I can remember. It's not really a bad place, I guess. I mean, sure it's kinda run down, there aren't many toys to go around, and some of the other kids are mean, but it's not so bad, I guess. Headmistress Catherine runs things, and she's a pretty nice lady. We don't go hungry or sleep on the floor or anything. We even got a bunch of new storybooks donated a while ago!
It's not really that I don't like living in the orphanage, it's just that… I just don't like being an orphan. I hate that my real mom and dad didn't want me. I hate that no family wants to adopt me. I hate that nobody cares about me, except for the headmistress, but she has to care cause it's her job. It's the worst feeling in the world, next to being bullied. Actually, I think both of those are why I ended up where I am now.
I think the part of the story where Rapunzel comes in started when the big search started. See, a while ago, the headmistress said, the King and Queen were gonna have a baby, but the Queen got sick. Real sick, like even the usual yucky medicine can't make it better. So, everybody went out lookin' for something else to make her better. I heard that they found some weird flower and that it made everything all right again.
Yeah, that's it! That's when Rapunzel comes in, cause then they had their baby and that was her and… Wait, I'm telling the story all wrong. That part didn't happen yet. I'm still at my part, and Rapunzel wasn't around then.
Hold on, let me start over. Uh, actually, I need to go to the bathroom, and then we'll start over. Don't worry, this story will get good in a little bit.
Author's note: In case it wasn't clear, Eugene is still a kid here. I'm not nailing down the exact age, because I really don't know what age would work best for this story. I've had this idea for a while, but could never get it rolling for one reason or another. Now, I'll have the first chapter up, so at least I've started the dang thing. And for my usual readers, updating this won't get in the way of updating my other stories.
The title is a working title that may change later. When I change it, I'll post the old title in the summery so you'll know which story this is.
