Summary: Light visits L's grave. AU

It was supposed to have been a sweet victory. To see his greatest enemy collapse into a heap at his feet; to hear his victim's last pained rasping breath; to feel the boy's clammy white hand in his. Light's eyes closed as a soft sigh escaped his lips. His hand tightened its hold on his umbrella as a gusty breeze blew his way. He had planned so long for this moment - the final battle between L and Kira. He was Justice personified and he refused to allow another to stand in his way. The world needed him. The world needed Kira.

Almost as if it were moving on its own, Light's feet begun its journey across a familiar mud-soaked path…

It had always been a competition. We were the best. It is only natural that we'd become enemies. His right hand trembled as he fought to regain control. I won. That's all. It was just a game. In the end, L's death wouldn't be in vain. Light came to an abrupt stop as he came face to face with a small nondescript gravestone.

"Ryuuzaki…"

The irony was not lost on him. L, who had been one of the greatest detectives in the world, lay beneath this grave. L had been buried in secret. No friends, no family, no one. The man who had once held the world in his fingertips had died alone. Light bowed his head in respect as the soft patter of raindrops trailed down his umbrella like tears. Matsada and his father had dug the hole. While he, alone, slowly and steadily covered the casket. He had killed an innocent man. His hands would never be clean.

"I'll make you proud," he murmured, almost to himself. "You'll see. Once this is all over, the world would be a better place. No criminals anymore, Ryuuzaki. No more murder. No more pain. It'd be like heaven."

He didn't know why he kept on returning to t-this god forsaken place. He didn't know why he just couldn't forget about the dark haired, raccoon-eyed enigma. He couldn't.

Light closed his eyes and pulled a single black rose from his pocket. His hand trembled as he kneeled down and placed it before the grave.

An apology.

An offering.

A goodbye.

"I'll never be fit to live in the world I am creating," Light whispered softly, as he gently wiped the dirt off the gravestone. "You knew that. You knew." A rebellious tear trickled out of the corner of his eyes. "And I killed you for being the only one brave enough to show me the truth."

Light's body shook as a particularly chilly gust of wind blew his way. L had been the only one who had understood him. The sweets obsessed detective was nothing like him and yet exactly like him all at once. They were like brothers.

"Raito-kun is my closest friend," a distant voice from the past echoed in his mind. An image of a dark haired boy crouching before him appeared in his mind's eye. Memories of their bickering and of their constant paranoia tore at his heart. I killed him. Brutally and coldly, like as if he had been nothing more than an animal.

Friend.

Brother.

Enemy.

Light turned his back to the grave and began walking away. He straightened his back and held his head high. He needed to get back to work. Kira would not rest until the world was in order…until a utopia arose.

"I promise, Ryuuzaki," he whispered as the wind stole his words away. "Kira will not rest until our dream is fulfilled."

"I swear it."
