Wolf out.
The sky was bright and open. The thermals gently caressed his russet wings. He watched the families at the beach, on their lawns, in the park, all so happy. Everything was perfect. He had even managed to catch his breakfast pretty quickly. But his mind was dark. Thinking of both of them. So similar, so so similar. He had confused them in his insanity. But now he knew there was a difference. Taylor did not have the friends Rachel had to guide her. And yet he couldn't help thinking, was Rachel going down that path? Taylor's path. Was the war causing it? Or had there always been some blood lust in her, waiting to be set free. Would he wake one morning to find a bald eagle clutching a knife? He chuckled in his mind. Nah, that wasn't Rachel's style. She'd be more likely to get her hands on a nuke. He circled higher, tucked in his wings and dived toward Rachel's house. He pecked on the glass from his perch on a low branch.
"Tobias?" Rachel opened her window so he could flutter in.
/Hey Rach./ He greeted her through thought-speak.
She stared at him, then whispered, "so, you ready for the mission later?".
/Good grief Rachel! You don't have to treat me like some vulnerable field mouse!/
She winced. He hadn't meant to make such a bird-like comparison. It was the first thing that came to mind, and that scared him. He could tell it bothered her too. She sighed heavily, changing topic.
"How do you see me Tobias? What did you mean when you said, don't be her, be you."
He chose his words carefully, /We've all done things Rach. We've all crossed the line. Sometimes all that matters is survival. Either way, you are Rachel. Not Visser Three, not David, not Taylor. You're one of the good guys./
"Even the good guys change, don't come out clean."
/Then maybe there are no "good guys"./
"I'm not bloodthirsty though, am I?"
He laughed in her head, /you're asking the wrong guy. When I saw David as a mouse, I almost ate him!"/
She laughed with him, "You're insane," she said matter-of-factly.
/Then join me in my madness./
"Where did you get that?" She asked, curious.
/From someone crazier than me/ He said seriously, /From someone I pity./
