If only
"Ed… what's wrong?" Alphonse asked as they road a train to Resmbool.
"Nothing." Ed sighed "I'm just thinking."
"About what?" Al asked.
"About…," Ed clenched his pocket watch tight. "Uhg, forget it."
"You sure are clenching that watch pretty tight." Al chuckled.
"Don't you remember how peaceful and wonderful life was when she was alive?" Ed asked as he stared out the window still clenching his watch.
"Yeah." Al said in a low voice, "What I remember most were her lullabies."
"For me it was her stew." Ed gave a slight smile at the thought.
"Heh, heh… well I just thought it tasted like milk." Al laughed.
"If only that bastard didn't leave… then maybe we'd still be living in Resmbool with her and we'd still have out normal bodies." Ed sighed.
"Yeah but if we get the philosopher stone-"
"Think about it Al. Are we really that desperate to go that far? That stone is made of human lives. Where's the equivalent exchange in killing millions of people to get your body back and my arm and leg? That's not even enough to scratch the surface of equivalent exchange for so many lives. We have to find another plan." Ed stated.
"Still, after all we've done we haven't gotten anything in return." Al said.
"So. Remember what Teacher said, there's no such thing as equivalency." Ed informed.
"Yeah, your right."
"Remember when we were still little and we would stay out after dark?" Ed said, changing the subject back to their mother.
"Uh huh… she would always take that light and flash it on and off. We would come strait home after that." Al said.
"And give us a scolding when we got there." Ed laughed.
"I miss her. I mean, we loved her more than anything." Al whispered.
"And that's why we had to try." Ed stated in a low voice.
"If only we knew the 'Truth' before we tried. Maybe….maybe things would have been different." Al growled, clenching his fists.
"Our theorems were correct but…we where stupid. We were blinded by our desires to bring her back. And so, instead of bringing her back from the dead…we created creature with no soul…a homunculus." Ed sighed, burying his head in his hands.
"But even so…I mean after all that….we still have each other. We're all we have." Al comforted.
"Yeah…. But Al, we do have family."
"What do you mean?"
"Aunt Pinako, Winry, the Colonel and the military, Teacher, and everyone else that we know. They have our backs. Even if they're not blood related." Ed explained.
"I guess your…right." Al sighed as he glared out the window and recognized the familiar rolling hills of his home town Resmbool.
