"Sir," the officer said, saluting once he'd brought the two ladies just inside the doorway of Adama's quarters.
"Thank you," Admiral Adama said, dismissing the officer, who closed the door behind him. "Shevon, yes?"
"I am," Shevon said, unsure of why she'd been grabbed with her daughter, and brought here. "I have to know -- did Lee put you up to this?"
The nearer corner of his lips quirked in a smile. "No, he didn't. He doesn't know you're here." Sparing a glance at a clock, "And I'm due to meet him not long from now, there's a meeting we need to attend." Seeing her face, resolute and firm, "I won't mention you."
Small measures of tension lifted from her. "Thank you...sir."
Adama stepped over and crouched before Paya, one hand behind him. "And you must be Paya. Am I right?"
Paya nodded.
He held out that hand from behind him, holding a patchwork cloth ball.
Paya picked it up, rolling it around, smiling.
Shevon quietly objected: "I really don't think she should be playing with -"
"This wasn't Lee's," Adama said. "It was his brother's."
She silently digested that, while watching Paya play with the ball.
Adama was still talking to her: "You can stay here as often as you need to. Lee won't know about any of it."
"And in return?" Shevon asked.
"You're not military: I can't order you to do this. I'm asking: I have a job for you. You'd be a courier, a spy if you like."
"That's all?"
"That's all," Adama assured her. Picking up a sheath from the nearby table, he stood up, holding the sheath out to her. She accepted it, looking over it while paying full attention to him. Another glance at the clock. "I have to go. When you're ready, go. If you want the job, Lieutenant Phy will escort you to the bay."
"And if I don't?"
"Then he'll escort you to the bay." He was almost to the door when -
"Admiral?" Shevon said.
"Yes?" Adama asked, pausing.
"Thank you."
He gave her a nod, and went on his way.
