My name is Jasper Aaliyah Topaz Strettel, but everyone just calls me Jazz. I'm 5'4 and I weigh 90 pounds, so I'm petite. I have blond hair with naturally pink streaks, and eyes that change color depending on my mood. Like, when I'm mad, they become firey red! Sad? A dark blue. Bored, and they're gray. If I'm really happy, they turn yellow! But they only change color when I'm feeling a lot of those feelings. Usually they're purple. I'm also very beautiful, and everyone says they're the most beautiful girl I've ever met.
I know that I'm not a normal girl. I have a birthmark shaped like a moon on the back of my left hand, and sometimes, at night, I wake up to a faint white light illuminating my dark room. The source is the birthmark, I swear!
I live with my parents and my pet wolf, Kodiak, in Abnegation. Usually, Abnegation doesn't have pets, but Kodiak is more of a person, because, well, he talks! It's boring in Abnegation, and I long for the Choosing Ceremony so I can be somewhere more interesting.
One night, my eyes popped open. I was in my bed, like usual when this happened. The light came out of my birthmark. I heard footsteps coming near my room. Kodiak lifted his broad gray-brown head, his black nose twitching as he sniffed the air.
"I have no idea who that is, but they smell strange. Not like a human at all," he barked. I felt fear shift in my belly. What was it? Who was it?
The door slid open, and my eyes burned. I saw a short old man in a black and white suit, like what Candor wears. He was glowing, bathing the entire space in a sparkly illuminance.
"Jazz... I must tell you something," he said. His voice was deep and booming.
I shivered in fear, locked in place by the sudden spectacle. "Yes, sir?"
"You have powers you have never realized... that you never could realize alone..."
Everything went white. A pleasurable feeling went through my body, shaking it to the core. My feet danced uncontrollably, heels against the aging mattress.
"You are Divergent, Jazz. That is what the aptitude test didn't tell you. It told you that you were Dauntless. He, the man who tested you, lied right to your face. He lied to you."
I flew through the brightness. My body seemed lighter than air.
"Your powers, they are unmatched; you will do so much for the society you were born into..."
Before I knew it, I was back in my bedroom, and the man was gone.
"Jazz! Jazz, wake up!" Kodiak howled, licking my face.
"I'm fine!" I said.
The wolf slid off of me. "I don't think you were fine. You were flailing around, and your birthmark and eyes were glowing..."
"He told me I was... Divergent?"
"Who?"
"The man..."
