Even though Winry is the first one to notice Hohenheim built a swing for them - it's not the best of swings, like the ones Pitt's dad made, with cushioned seats hanging on chains, but it can keep them hanging, and the fact that it was done with the best intentions ought to count - , she doesn't try it out until Ed wakes up from his nap and offers to push her on the swing.

It may be past four a.m, and it's incredibly cold outside, but it doesn't stop Winry from standing on the porch of the old yellow house, switching the large flashlight on and off as she watches him walk up that hill towards home.

She had two pockets that would be perfectly able to keep her jewelry safe during her stay in the North, and a small voice inside her head keeps telling her she doesn't know if this is the last time she'll see him again for a long time; and yet, Winry still runs up to him and curls his gloved fingers around her earrings, asking him to keep them while they're apart.


4.

As they're standing there, no longer two teenagers with clumsy limbs and childish voices that don't fit the age in their eyes, Edward doesn't know what overwhelms him the most: To see Winry safe and sound or to see how her faith in him, that he can save them all, can very well lead her to her death.


5.

The first thing Edward notices when he wakes up isn't Alphonse's frail human body sleeping on the other side of the brightly lit room or the bandages wrapped around his sore aching body; it's the warm slice of apple pie resting on the bedside table, with a soft cloud of steam emanating from it.
