She looked small against the height of the tall oak in front of her. He had watched her all day, sizing up the tree with her gaze, only to take her time climbing to the top.
She had a clothesline from her room to her tree house, a child's dream setup.
Many people would take one look at her and find her childish, however, he just found it charming. Her smile and laugh, even from a distance, was contagious.
He loved the way her hair curled, the way her dimples showed, and how her gleaming green eyes shone in the summer sun.
It was an odd feeling, knowing everything about someone yet being so far.
He heard the clambering of quick feet up the stairs behind him.
"Jace, Mom has been calling you down for lunch like forty times." Jonathan joked from the threshold of the room.
"Well maybe you should be my mom, you're loud enough."
Getting up from his seat by the window, he chased his brother down the stairs, briefly forgetting his daydream.
Fourteen years of sitting behind that window chasing the fantasy of meeting that girl, he would never forget about her completely.
She would always be the girl he had never met, the girl who had never laid eyes on him, the girl who lived in the small house behind him.
She would always be the girl, a stone's throw away.

-3 years later-
"Come on loser, we gotta go!"
He sighed, finishing tying the laces on his converse. "Can you like, not be this excited? Please? I don't know if I could handle all of-", He gestured to her entire body, "- this."
She scoffed, hitting him playfully.
"Come on, you love me more than you'll admit" Clary shot a silly smile to her best friend.
"Mhm, yeah sure. I bet you as soon as we find out that you only share two classes with me, that smile will be gone" He said pointing a finger in her direction as they walked down the street.
"But that's two classes better. Also, I think I'll be able to handle myself."
"Two classes isn't the best reason to switch high schools, Clary." He said mockingly rolling his eyes.
"Come on, don't act like you aren't excited to have you're best friend with you at all times." She snuggled up against his arm like a little cat, sarcastically.
"Who are you? Chairman Meow?" Simon joked.
"Oh heavens no, my Uncle Magnus' cat is ten times more spoiled and pampered than me. I would kill to be that cat." She said with distaste.
Simon gave a chuckle before stopping on the sidewalk, putting himself in front of Clary.
"Welcome to my school, which is now yours to have, although I wouldn't recommend it. It truly sucks." He gestured to the huge building behind him.
"Oh haha, it can't be that bad."
He gave her a look that was supposed to mean Oh? Really? but she brushed it off.
"Alrightie tour guide, lead the way."
Walking side by side, they climbed the steps up into the old stone student prison together. He was the only one who she could be free around and the only one who could calm her down if she was getting too crazy. They were best friends and they were damn good together.

Leaning against the desk, he played boredly with the pen on a string. He was waiting for his egotistical brother, who was being overly kind to the new attendance lady.
As she turned to go print something off, Jace flicked his brother's ear.
"Ow, what the hell was that for?"
"You've been here since the first day of school, and you still don't know your classes? That was two months ago. Two months and you still don't know your classes?!" Jace said in an aggressive whisper.
"Do you think I'm really that stupid Jace? No need to throw a hissy fit because you have to be down here with me when you want to be with the guys. I got my classes switched. The damn registrar printed the wrong sheet. It's not my fault I've been going to the wrong class for a month!"
Jace simply stared at the man like he was an idiot.
Flashing his wicked smirk at Jace, he peeked over the desk as the woman came back.
While he wasn't his brother's number one fan, Jace definitely saw all of their similarities. It sucked being exactly like the asshat beside him just with a completely different look. Everyone compared Jace to Jonathan, and he hated when people assumed he was as cocky and arrogant as him. Jace simply played a role at school, the popular football jock, and he didn't mind everything that came along with it.
The only thing that threw people off was how little they resembled of each other.
Jonathan had almost snow white hair, and Jace had golden. His brother's eyes were abnormally dark compared to Jace's light hazel beauties. His brother's skin tone was very fair, and he was a smooth tanned.
The woman finally handed Jonathan his schedule and began to small talk him. Gross.
Two people walked in, and although Jace didn't think much of it, he noticed the nerdiest kid in all of the school. Simon Lewis.
He never got along with the kid, but he never picked on him.
Jonathan turned quickly, and with Jace following, he accidentally bumped into the kid. Simon tripped and papers flew everywhere.
Jace and Jonathan were about to shrug it off until they heard a voice.
"Simon!" The voice cried.
Jace immediately turned around. A small girl with fiery hair helped up Simon and bent down to pick up his papers. She stuffed them back into his arms and looked to face him.
She brushed her thumb over the large crack in his glasses and sighed. "This will be the fourth pair." She mumbled to herself.
Then she stood, turning to face the two boys.
They stood, captivated with her beauty. He noticed every detail in her face including her faint freckles and the light brown flecks in her iris'.
He snapped out of his daydream when her face twisted into stone. "Hey, can you watch where the hell you're going?" Jace blinked and stepped back as if she had hit him.
"Clary, it's okay. It's just a guy." Simon said, getting up and brushing off his pants.
"That doesn't give him an excuse." She spoke to Simon, but her fiery glare stayed on Jace. It was only a brief moment, but it felt like a lot longer
She shook her head and chuckled lightly to Jace. "Stupid arrogant jocks thinking they can do whatever they want."
She broke the eye contact and looked to Simon, purposely bumping Jace's shoulder as the pair walked away to the front desk.
"Wow, now that's a feisty one," Jonathan mumbled.
Jace stood, shocked. Jonathan had no clue.
This was the girl, Clary. She lived behind Jace for years. He had dreamed about her, thought about her, and spoke about her almost all of his life. This was the girl he loved for what he saw on the outside and begged to know on the inside.
This was the girl he had dreamed of meeting. And he just did.
And she totally hates him.

"Simon, you can't just let those jerks push you around," Clary replied in a serious tone.
He shrugged, seeming as if he wanted to move past it. She dreaded thinking that this happens to him constantly and she had never known.
"Well, then I'll always be here. Did you see how that jerk listened to me? All you need is some eye candy." She perked up to her usual tone, giving her best friend a side wink.
"That jerk would listen to any hot girl," Simon smirked. "You know? He's like the school man-whore, that Jace Morgenstern."
Jace Morgenstern. Clary would remember to keep that name in her head.
Clary nodded. "Oh like Raphael Santiago from my last school?" Simon nodded.
Clary thought of that loser from her old school, and a shiver went down her spine. "Egh, pervert," She mumbled to no one in particular.
They wandered, looking for Clary's locker, finally being put back into a good mood.
When they finally found it, Simon peered up at the school clock, rolling his eyes.
"Okay, I really gotta go. But good luck finding your class Clare. Catch ya at lunch!"
Before he ran off, she grabbed his wrist, writing her locker number in black sharpie.
"Am I really just a canvas to you?" He smirked sarcastically, trotting away from her.
She really wished he could just come with her.
o.O.o
Walking into her first class of the day, she expected the odd glace, but not eyes from everyone in the class. She quickly hopped over to the first empty seat she saw.
"Can I sit here?" She mumbled to the seemingly preoccupied kid.
He yanked one of his headphones out and looked up at her. Settling into a smirk, he pulled out the chair for her.
"It would be my pleasure." He said as she placed her books on the desk, and sat down.
After the initial teacher ramble, Clary found herself nodding away from the lesson. Her eyes started to rest curiously on the boy beside her.
He was tall, from what she saw, and definitely, fit. He had fair skin and freakishly blonde pin straight hair. She had to admit, the kid made her hand itch for her art pencils.
She failed to notice, however, that the boy beside her would look at her the same way she looked at him.
He inspected her, eyes raking her body in utter fascination.
She caught his stare from the corner of her eye and saw his smirk light up as he slowly glanced away.
Clary almost hopped out of the chair when the bell rang, picking up her books and tucking in the chair.
The boy stood up, beside her, literally looking down on her. She was right, painstakingly tall.
"I'm Jonathan. And you are?" He gave her a wicked smile.
"Curious as to why you choose the end of the class to talk to me," she retorted, tilting her head slightly.
"Well, its simply common decency for the teacher and the pretty new girl who may need to catch up in this class."
She changed the grip on her books, taking a step back so she didn't have to strain her neck to look him in the eyes.
"Clary. I just switched schools today," she said, smiling politely.
"Just switched? In the middle of the semester? It must've been something jarring for quite a change. If you need a shoulder to cry on, it would be my pleasure." He smirked, becoming increasingly cocky by the second.
"I think I'll manage," Clary said, turning to leave the class.
"Do you want to meet for lunch?" He cut in making her turn around.
She shook her head slightly. "Now that would be my pleasure, but I already have plans. Try asking on a day that doesn't end in 'Y'." She reflected his smirk.
"Ouch, you really are more than what you look. I'll talk to you later, little red."
He watched as she spun, leaving the room, and leaving him even more curious.
