The Truth

Chapter one:

First Encounter

A locker door slammed. I barely noticed the sound as I grabbed a textbook from my own ordered locker. My best friend, Stephanie, chattered on about her latest English assignment, Gone with the Wind.

"And I've still got to do the note cards!" she exclaimed as we began walking down the hall. I looked at her quizzically.

"What note cards?" I asked. Her oval face conveyed annoyance as her green eyes searched my blue ones for a sign of intelligence. She must have seen something, for she resumed walking.

"Ally, I've been complaining all week. Haven't you been listening?" I knew Stephanie well enough to know that she was just stressed. We had been friends since middle school and had had only a few fights. Well, not even fights, just bad days that had gotten worse.

"Look! There's Brooke!" Stephanie pointed out a determined-looking girl heading our way. My chatty friend immediately set out to meet the other girl, her latest victim. I smiled slightly and followed Stephanie.

"It's about time you got here. Now we only have ten minutes to cram for that Biology test." Stephanie admonished Brooke. Brooke just rolled her clear gray eyes and deposited her book bag by the door of her first period class.

"Sorry I couldn't get to school earlier, Mother." Brooke returned, and two of us burst into laughter. Stephanie just glared at her witty friend and stalked off. 'If looks could kill, Brooke would have been dead long ago.' I thought to myself. As we laughed, the bell rang. That meant we had six minutes to get to class.

Brooke and I waited for a few moments and then Stephanie reappeared. She had an impatient look on her face as she said, "Well, let's go." Brooke looked at me and swirled her index finger around her ear. I held back laughter as the two of us followed our demanding friend to class.

"Ally," Mrs. Snipes beckoned to me as we passed the guidance office. Brooke and Stephanie exchanged glances as I broke off to she what the kind guidance counselor wanted.

"Yes, Mrs. Snipes?" I asked. The plump woman ushered me into the nearly empty room. My eyes immmediately fell on the other occupant.

"Thank goodness I found you." The guidance counselor sounded relieved. "As you can see, we have a new student." She gestured to the stranger, the one I couldn't stop staring at. "Fortunately, the two of you share the same classes. So I hope you can show him around the school." I took a second to glance at Mrs. Snipes, who was rifling through some papers.

"Ah, here we are." She pulled out a single blue sheet, most likely the new boy's schedule. "Christopher Southers." Mrs. Snipes smiled pleasantly at the boy leaning against the wall, hands stuffed in his pockets.

He straightened, extended his hand and sent me a dazzling smile. "Just call me Chris."

I had to grab his hand to kept from fainting.
