Due Credit
"Mr. Weasley, Ms. Granger, care to tell me why you are out of bed?" Professor McGonagall's stern voice came drifting out of the darkness ahead of them.
"No, not rea- uhmph" Hermione had elbowed him in the ribs, shutting him up effectively. "'Mione!"
"Show more respect for your elders," Hermione whispered furiously. "Ronald, here, was looking for me while I was finishing up my rounds as part of my Head Girl duties, Professor. We were just heading back to the common room."
"Actually, Professor, we were heading to the Room of Requirement to me-"
"Shut up, Ronald!" Hermione hissed angrily.
"Professor, I apologize for any rudeness on behalf of the Head Boy, but I got wind of a prank that a couple of Fifth Years were going to pull in the Seventh Floor corridor, and wanted to catch them in the act so that they had no plausible deniability."
"Ms Granger, I hope that you do realize that you just contradicted your explanations," came Professor McGonagall's calm reply. "Now, what were you really doing?"
"I left my homework in the Library and I did not want to have to turn in incomplete homework, and Ronald convinced me to sneak out and collect it." Hermione sounded close to tears at the shame of turning late homework.
"Actually, it was all Hermione's ide- ow!" Ron rubbed his sorely abused ribs.
"Shut up, Ronald!"
"Ten points from Gryffindor and don't let me catch you out again. Now go back to your dorms," Professor McGonagall said.
She walked off down the corridor but not before she heard a whispered voice saying, "OK, we won't let you catch us, again."
"That was way too close for my liking."
A deeper voice replied, "sorry, 'Mione," Ron grumbled quietly. "I was just trying to make sure that all credit was assigned fairly."
"That only applies to homework, Ronald."
The couple's squabbling grew fainter as they walked down the corridor, to the Head Dorm. In their wake, they left one very confused Professor who had decided that she just did not want to know what they had been doing.
