Harry clicked on the radio and Al's favorite song spilled out of it,

"If I die young, bury me in satin

Lay me down on a bed of roses

Sink me in the river at dawn

Send me away with the words of a love song."

James thumped down the stairs, "Dad I found something in Albus' room."

Harry's head snapped up, "What? What did you find?"

"These," James held out three envelopes. "There's one for you, Mum, and Scorpius."

Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother

She'll know I'm safe with you when

She stands under my colors

Life ain't always what it ought to be

Ain't even gray when she buries her baby

Ginny hung up another pillowcase and sighed, another gorgeous summer day, Al's favorite. She half-expected him to be under his favorite tree, absorbed in a book. Looking at the tree, she saw the rainbow flag that Al had tied to one of the branches. She smiled. That boy.

James came running out of the house, waving a piece of paper in the air.

"Mum!" he gasped, "I found a letter for you. From Al."

Her eyes widened and she snatched it out of his hand.

I've never known the loving of a man

But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand

There's a boy in town who says he'll love me forever

Who would've thought forever could be severed

So put on your best boys, I'll wear my pearls

What I never did is done

Scorpius lay down next to the silk, gray shirt and perfectly pressed pants his mother wanted him to wear to the party tonight. It was some sort of work thing for his father, the asshole. He was throwing parties while his son was despairing over the pointlessness he now felt.

The doorbell chimed and Scorpius rolled over. Guests were arriving and his mother would be up at any moment to tell him to get dressed. He heard the door open, but didn't bother looking up until he heard James' frantic voice.

"Scor! I found a note for you! From Al." James said, dropping to a whisper at the end.

Scorpius sat up, and with trembling hands, opened the letter James gave him.

It read, "A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I'll sell them for a dollar

They're worth so much more after I'm a goner

And maybe then you'll hear the words I've been singing

Funny how when you're dead, people start listening

"I've had just enough time

"The ballad of a dove

Go with peace and love

Gather up your tears; put them in your pocket

Save them for a time when you'll really need them."

And I'll be wearing white when I come into your kingdom

I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger

Lily clutched James hand as she watched the crowd that poured out of the arrival train. The last person out of the last car was who they were looking for.

Unruly black hair sprouted from the head of the boy wearing a white t-shirt and white, tight jeans. He wore a gold ring on third finger of his left hand. It was set with an emerald, the same color as his eyes, the same as hers. As he grabbed the door of the train to steady himself, Lily could see blood red lines etched into his arms.

The sharp knife of a short life
