I just watched Body of work as I could only remember the vaguest of details fro when it was originally shown and knew it was a fantastic episode. Having also seen Bloodlines recently along with the most recent series this happened. I wrote it really really quicklly (about 30 minutes max) but would love reviews to tell me what you think comment and share your views!
People often talk about their 'type' when it comes to relationships.
Often they mean a particular look , job or interest.
Most people who know Harry Cunningham would say that his type was the twenty something blonde with more looks than sense or intelligence.
Its not though.
Yes, they are the women he chases after now but that is simply because every time he follows his heat goes after the women that fit with his true type everything falls apart.
Things end., people die.
The two women he has loved this way, who he allowed himself to love are dead and he can't let there be a third.
Not ever, and certainly not her.
So what is his type, he isn't sure he has ever fully thought this out, even for himself so he begins to think of what characteristics link the three women who, other than his mother, have had the most impact on his life.
All three of them had been, or were in the case of the woman for whom he was currently ignoring feelings, extremely clever women.
Penny had made it all the way to Med school the same as he had , although she had gone by the second year for reasons he had discovered nearly a full twenty years on. She had done well through that first year.
One decision could change the world forever and the end of that relationship had changed so many things but he had been young , stupid and scared.
Anna had been so intelligent using all her knowledge to fight for those girls to try and make things better.
Nikki, she outsmarted him on a daily basis and probably always would but they could spar they joked, they got each other and could share so much because they ere intellectually often on the same plane.
The women he loved were also passionate, feisty women. They gave all they could to what they cared about whether it was work or a relationship.
This is what made the relationships, or friendship in the case of Nikki, so good and the arguments so spectacular. These women vibrated and exploded with emotion and well that had many good points but also many bad.
It was also what made Anna and Nikki so good at what they did. They cared and would do whatever they could to get what they wanted because of that.
It had led to Anna's death, her passion for her job her relentless need to see a solution had led to her murder. It wasn't what had led to Penny's but it was what had led to the death of their relationship, he still occasionally remembered that fight twenty five yeas on and it wasn't pleasant.
Nikki and he had dramatic screaming matches arguments full of the passion he wished they could share for other reasons but he knew they never would.
If they got close again another woman from his past would turn up or something would destroy it. He and Nikki had shared one amazing passionate kiss about five years back and he still thought of it, at times he probably shouldn't, but then that week Penny's body had come in and everything was destroyed. His dream of what that relationship could have been faded into the mists.
Then, they, something,, had almost happened after Hungary but the ghosts of Anna and his unborn child had lingered too strongly strangling the seedlings of hope and love that had been growing.
He wanted that with Nikki he wanted love but he couldn't destroy her. He wanted to love and protect her and knew he could do that as a friend so that would have to be it.
She needed him and he needed her. They needed trust and friendship and security and he would give her that even if he had and always would want so much more.
