"I would have loved you, you know."
The words resounded along the walls behind him, and his heart instantly dropped upon recognizing the voice. He turned slowly, looking up into the almond green eyes that avoided him for years. Lost for words, he let out a feeble sounding whimper, as if to ask her what she meant. Lily took a step closer, her auburn curls cascading around her face.
"I would have loved you," she clarified solemnly, "if you hadn't pursued the Dark Arts." She hesitated before correcting herself. "I did. I did love you."
His stomach plummeted, heart racing at a million miles per hour. How many times had he dreamed of hearing her say that she loved him? It was a wish instilled deep inside him that he would never be able to forget. Finally, he caught his breath and spoke.
"I can stop. It doesn't mean anything to me. Lily… you do." His voice hitched as she took another step closer. This was the closest she had been to him since that fateful day when he said the words he lived to regret for the rest of his life. From this distance, the sweet scent of her strawberry shampoo filled his nostrils, and he had the sudden urge to run his fingers through her hair.
"You know it's too late Severus," the look in her eyes was of a deep sadness he longed to fill with joy. Knowing that he was the cause of the sadness created a sharp pain in his chest that refused to go away. "You've become too close with them. If you back out now they'll kill you."
Severus remained quiet, his hands twitching as his mistakes and regrets swirled in his mind endlessly. He let in a sharp intake of breath as he felt the smoothness of her skin on his. She had placed her hand against his. What happened next he would never forget.
Lily pressed close against him, and Severus let out a shuddering breath in response to her breath against his cheek. She was leaning up on her toes, her lips level with his. And that was when she kissed him. Amidst a blur of emotions and heightened senses, He could taste her smooth cherry lips. His own heartbeat pounded in his ears, and the flush of warmth rush both to his cheeks, and to other parts of his body. Between the movements of his erratic heartbeat and her slender tongue, he managed to tangle his fingers in her hair with one hand and wrap his other arm around her.
The blissfulness ended just as quickly as it came. As she pulled away, her lips brushed against the side of his face. Her breath tickled his ear, as she whispered, "Don't ever forget me, Severus Snape."
With that, her eyes pierced him for the last time as she turned away, leaving his broken pleas wasted in the shadows, the ghost of her lips imprinted onto his.
A/N: So, I absolutely love Lily & James, but my heart breaks for Snape sometimes, so I had to write this. He needed at least one moment, amirite?
Maybe, who knows. First FanFic in YEARS. Review if you wanna help out a girl trying to get back into it. Let me know what you think. (:
