"However much I hate to admit it, Jimena is right." Stanton told Serena, holding her close. "It cannot be."
"But Stanton -" Serena protested, looking back at her best friend, but Stanton shushed her and gave her a small push to Jimena who grabbed her protectively.
Stanton sighed, and there was a loud Earth-shattering crack, which broke the silence. A large crevice opened in the ground, directly behind Stanton.
"NO!" Serena yelled, even as she saw him fall backwards toward the gaping chasm.
Pulling free from Jimena, she ran and threw herself to the edge of the crevice as Stanton fell. Landing with a loud thump, Serena reached over the edge and grabbed his arm. His weight was too much for her and her hand slipped to his. Their eyes met and Stanton knew he was going to drag her down with him and that was what the Atrox wanted.
Putting her face to his, Serena's lips met his softly, before Stanton let go and dissolved into shadow.
Jimena ran to the chasm and pulled Serena to her feet.
"Serena, are you okay?" No answer. "Serena?"
"Jimena?" Serena snapped from her trane-like state. "Yeah, I'm okay."
But she said it with such sadness Jimena knew she wouldn't be okay, not for a long while. Neither of them noticed the shadow lurking behind them, near the lip of the crater.
