Question Everything

"Uncle Warrick?"

"Yeah?"

"Why are they fighting?"

"It's just a disagreement. Don't worry."

"Is it about me?"

"No! No, your mom and dad just have some things to discuss."

"What's discuss?"

"Uh, talk about things."

"Talk about what?"

"Things. It's hard to explain."

"Did I do something wrong?"

"No, it's not your fault. You did nothing wrong."

"How come my heart hurts?"

Warrick looked down at her in his lap, his green eyes glistened with something he didn't know inside himself. Something he couldn't quite put a finger on.

"Don't worry," was all he could say.

"I'm scared."

"I know you are."

"They're always fighting at home."

"You hear them?"

"They thought I was sleeping, but I wasn't. They were yelling."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah." Her eyes grew wide, "You won't tell them I hear them, will you?"

"No, I won't tell them."

"Uncle Warrick, I want to go home."

"I know. I know. It'll be over soon."

"Mommy's always crying."

"Really?"

"Why is she so sad?"

"Sometimes, your mom and dad just don't agree on the same things. And your mom gets upset."

"Is it because she fell down?"

"She fell down?"

"Yeah, Uncle Grissom says she fell down."

"When?"

"Yesterday. Uncle Grissom came over."

"Yesterday?"

"Yeah. Mommy was crying. I heard her."

"What did Uncle Grissom do?"

"He told Mommy to take a bath."

"What else happened?"

"He came into my room. I closed my eyes, and pretend I was sleeping."

"How come?"

"I didn't want him to know I heard Mommy crying."

"Oh."

"Is Uncle Grissom going to help them?"

"He'll try."

"What's going to happen?"

"I don't know."

"When will you know?"

"I'll know when I know."

"Okay."

"Did you ask your mom why she was crying?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"I was scared."

Warrick nodded silently.

"Uncle Warrick?"

"Hmmm?"

"Everything will be okay, right?"

"I hope so."

"Me too."

"You all right?"

"I hope Mommy's all right."

"Did your mom say anything?"

"She told me everything's okay, but Uncle Grissom said she fell."

"Mommy'll be okay, right?"

Warrick nodded again.

"Uncle Warrick?"

"Yeah?"

"Can I ask you a question?"

"Of course. What?"

"You won't leave, right?"

"Right."

"Uncle Grissom won't leave, right?"

"Right."

"What about Mommy?"

"She'll never leave you. Never."

"You promise?"

"I swear."

"What about Daddy?"

"We'll see."

"You don't like Daddy, do you?"

Warrick looked at her surprised at her straightforwardness.

"Your dad is a good guy. Sometimes he could try a little harder."

"Try what?"

"Just try."

"Okay."

"I'll try too. I don't want Mommy to be sad."

"Good. She loves you, you know?"

"Yes, I know. She tells me every morning before I go to school."

"When your dad's not home, you watch out for your mom, okay?"

"Okay."

Lindsey looked up at Warrick. Her eyes were exactly like her mother's.

"Uncle Warrick?"

"Yeah?"

"You'll help me take care of Mommy, right?"

"We all will, Lindsey. We all will."

"Cross your heart?"

"Cross my heart."

"You really promise?"

She extended her little pinky up to him. He smiled and linked his finger with hers.

"I really promise."
