Prologue

I watch the trees blur together from inside this cramped car. Flashes of vibrate greens whirl together, making the trees look as if locked in embraces, dancing and swaying as if to say goodbye, taunting me to come join them. I sign not for the first time today and turn my head to my getaway driver.

"You sure this is what you want?" He asks for what feels like the millionth time. I glare at him, which earns me a smile, one I used to loath but has become familiar.

I lean my head on the window, choosing not to answer, letting the walls inside my head down a notch, just enough to imagine him. His arrogant eyes, which challenged my every move, his dark smile that dared me into becoming the person I am today. His embrace that provoked me any chance it got.

I mentally slap myself, remaining myself that he is my past, that there was never a future.

"Liebrina?" I hear from outside my personal hell and open my eyes a slit to stare at the monster before me.

"Hmm?" I mumble, faked carelessness over shadowing my voice.

"You know if you want to revisit old memories, by all means have at it, but your phone has a different agenda." He replies, pointing at the phone in my lap with his eyes.

"Damn." I say under my breath." Guess I forgot to chuck this in the ocean on the way out." I clench my hand until it folds in half, loving the current that runs through my body when I use my strength.

I glance out the window just as we're passing the leaving Forks sign and bit my tongue to keep the sob inside that's trying to escape.

Damien reaches over and places his hand on my shoulder. "Do you believe everything happens for a reason?"

Regardless of our differences and the whole natural enemy's thing, I find myself grateful that it is him sitting next to me. "Yes." I say with a smile, while a tear slides down my face.
