Alice's POV
I walked outside, into the crisp night time air, past our huge white house, into the forest that stretched out as far as the average human could see. I could see better. The tall trees seemed to point the way towards my mission. I needed to find Jasper. Just a half hour ago, Bella had been turned into a vampire. She always wondered what she would look like when she was one, so I had brought out a mirror to show her. After that, I saw Jasper flinch and briskly walk outside out of the corner of my eye. I knew I had done something. But what?
I decided it was better to run. I would get to him faster. So I did. While running over the moss-covered ground, I spotted a small patch of yellow behind a big rock. I would know that hair anywhere. I had found him. He sat on the ground, his knees bent, and turned his head to look at me. His eyes were black. But not with hunger-with pain. His soft mouth was twisted into a smooth line on his face. And his curly, honey blonde hair was sticking out in all places.
"Yes?" he asked. It hurt to see him like this. He read my expression and answered his own question. "I'm fine."
"Jasper, I know you a lot better than that. What's up? Did I do something?" I sat down next to him, and wove my tiny fingers through his soft curls. "Tell me. If there's something I can do, I'll do it."
He smiled just ever so slightly, and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "No, Alice, it isn't you." His sweet smile vanished. "It's…it's…it's Bella." Now that I was surprised about.
"Well, it wasn't really her fault. She looked in the mirror, and saw me. She didn't see someone perfect like you, or Edward. She saw me and my…" it took him a second to say it "my scars." My face softened. He looked away, staring into space. "She was scared. I felt it. I'll always scare her with these reminders of death!" He pointed to one of his deepest scars, on is shoulder.
"I'm a monster. I lived to kill. Now, I'll live to be frightening. No one looks at me the way they look at all of you. With you, they see perfection. With me, they see danger." If vampires could cry, he would have been.
I pulled him close to me. We stayed like that for awhile.
"I don't deserve you, Alice." he whispered. I pushed him back, and he gave me a look of surprise.
"Jasper Whitlock Hale, don't you ever say that. You're the best thing that ever happened to me. And you are perfect just the way you are." I pulled the collar of his shirt over to kiss one of the scars on his shoulder. I moved to kiss one on his cheek. He rested my head on his lap, and kissed my lips.
"Alice?"
"Yes Jasper?"
"I think I finally understand the meaning of the words soul mates."
