Reuben Simmons is a man unlike any other.
He had worked for a secret government branch that specialised in alien beings. He had been caught up in the whole conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons. And even though Sector 7 had been abolished, his job gone, having been resigned to cutting fish and meats in a small shop with his mother, he could not go a day without thinking of those experiences. Despite having been embarrassed in front of his men, it was an experience he had dreamt of. But he knew he could never have one like it ever again.
Until just a few weeks ago, that is. He had been thrust right back into the heat of battle along with the Witwicky kid, his criminal girlfriend and some other special guy.
Reuben Simmons never thought he could find love. He especially never thought that saving the world from certain doom would let him find it.
Especially in someone like Leo Spitz.
Reuben Simmons wonders why someone like Leo, someone so young with a bright future ahead of him, who almost certainly had options (but then Simmons didn't really know that much about his college life) would choose someone like him. "Because you're the only one who don't mind me," Leo would laugh, but Simmons wonders if there's something more.
He supposes it's something like Sam and Mikaela's relationship and how they got to be where they current were at – surviving waves and waves of death, destruction and danger. Indeed, there was always something special about the person who's beside you when there are explosions all around, and even more so when you both live.
That's why Reuben Simmons was so glad when Leo appeared over the sand dunes unharmed after the Decepticon attacks in Egypt, something he never really admitted. Just a: "Nice work, kid," and a friendly pat on the back.
And then he began turning up to his shop more often than was necessary for business purposes.
And after a while, Reuben Simmons stopped chasing him out.
Now even his mother was beginning to catch on, beginning to teasingly ask her son if he wanted her to make him sandwiches for the both of them whenever he ducked out. "It's not what you think!" He'd always exclaim, grumbling and muttering as he slung on his jacket. But unfortunately, she was right.
Reuben Simmons was in love with the most unlikely of all people, and had began craving for his attention and affection since all that time they had spent in their quest to help Witwicky together.
It was something he hated to admit, but did, especially when Leo pulled him close to give him a quick peck on the lips, undoing the button on his jeans.
