Chapter 1

"Hurry up!" Marae Raito yelled up the stairs to her friend "We're going to be late for the concert!"

"Ich weiß" Kassia London shouted back in German. "I don't know how I let you talk me into going to a concert. I hate being around people."

"You need a life," she replied, "outside of sports. What's taking you so long?"

"Mein dumm hund took my boot," the light brown and red streaked haired girl groaned as she continued digging under her bed. "Volf, go get my boot!"

The large black/white/gray wolf/husky mix leapt gracefully off the bed and trotted out the door. Kassia groaned again and followed the dog down the stairs and into the family room. Marae sat on the couch, toying with a strand of her black hair. She gave her friend a strange look. Kassia shrugged and followed the dog outside to his dog house. Volf disappeared inside and reappeared seconds later with the boot in his mouth.

"Yay! You found it!" Marae cried, sticking her head out the window.

Kassia took the boot from Volf and slipped it on. "Hide Marae next time kay, boy?"

Volf licked her cheek and pushed her towards the door with his head. Reluctantly, his mistress stood and went inside where her coat was thrown at her. The girls called a good bye to the hairy mutt and rushed out of the house.

Volf huffed and went back outside via his doggy door. A new scent crossed his nose. He turned just in time to see a trench coat clad figure climb onto a motorcycle. Volf narrowed his blue and brown eyes. With a running lea, he cleared the five foot chain link fence and took off to search for his mistress.

The ride had been quiet. Not the kind of quiet where neither party wished to talk, but the kind of quiet that screamed tension and discomfort. Marae glanced at her friend who was staring out the window. "What's wrong, Kass?"

"Nothing," she sighed.

"Bull! I know something's wrong, so spill it."

Kassia's light gray eyes darkened in anger. "My dad's started dating and he kept it from me."

"Then how'd you find out?" Marae asked, slightly confused.

"There have been different shades of pink lipstick on his collars and other stuff in his dress slacks. We both know I never wear pink and that." she shuddered at the thought.

"Have you not talked to him about it yet?"

"Yeah and that I'm actually a guy," she replied sarcastically. "Could we not talk about this right now?"

Marae's golden eyes flashed understanding and she nodded. She glanced out her rearview mirror. Her eyes widened in surprise. "Is that Volf running after us?"

"Yeah right and I'm one of those mutants the news won't shut up about." Kassia rolled her eyes at her friend, but looked behind them in curiosity. "Oh shit! I am a mutant! Pull over Marae!"

Marae did as her friend ordered and pulled her blue Accent over to the curb. Kassia was out of the car and at Volf's side before she had the car in park. Crawling out, she inquired "Is he okay? How'd he get out?"

"Volf's fine amazingly. He must have jumped the fence."

"Do we take him back or take him to the concert with us?"

"You already know the answer, Marae. Why must you ask?" Kassia laughed. Marae smirked. "Come on Volf." She opened the door for the dog. "In ya go." Volf jumped into the backseat of the Accent.

"Where are we gonna keep him during the concert?" Marae asked.

Kassia growled at her and crawled back into the car, sighing in amusement. Marae followed suit.
