Hundreds of years ago, in the land known as Japan, living among the humans were demons, creatures of sin and darkness that cared nothing for the humans or each other. The two sides were always at war, demons would eat humans and use them for horrible sins; humans would kill demons or use them to get power. Then one day, history changed forever.

An inu Youkai was traveling through a dense forest when he heard a scream; despite his instincts saying otherwise, he followed it to an attack. Four men, thugs, were attacking a young princes, the old inu was shocked and mesmerized by her beauty and before he could stop himself, he attacked and devoured the men, saving the human jewel. The woman only got a glimpse of the demon before he disappeared from sight, not long after she was found her bodyguards; unknown to her, the demon watched over.

For many years, the inu youkai watched over his hime, protecting her without showing his presence, falling more and more in love with the ningen onaa. When the woman became twenty-one her father gave her to a rich suitor, and this displeased the inu greatly. His demon instincts scream at him to claim her as his but his more peaceful side told him to let her go, that their worlds would always be apart. Suddenly, one night, the unthinkable happened.

The suitor attacked his bride for refusing him, before the suitor could strike her, the inu attacked; this time, he stayed. The woman was shocked! Her rescuer and love from so long ago! When she asked him to turn however, she screamed! A demon! The castle men rushed to save her while the demon stood stiff, hearing not the guards or priest coming to kill him, but the fearful heartbeat of his love. One that he had come to love hearing.

Just as the guards closed in, the inu youkai released an anguish howl to full moon, begging for peace for his shattered heart. In a flash of white, stunning the humans, the inu was gone. Nothing was left but the sapling of a Sakura tree; within it, the soul of the inu, so he may watch his love always. That night, demons all over Japan died or became another living being like an animal or plant, or even mountains. The beautiful hime was married off and she forgot her demon prince, though she always swore, on the full moon night, she'd hear a howl…

Maybe it wasn't the wind…?
