It's Valentine's Day and for the first time, Rin isn't spending the day wishing for Kakashi.
She can't.
It's Obito's funeral today, and for some reason the act of being around Kakashi, the wishing for him to like her back, the mere thought of him seems like a direct betrayal to Obito. It feels like she's taking something from him; hurting him…crushing him. No, she can't think like that. She knows that Obito would want her to be happy, no matter what.
And Rin wants to be, so much. She wants to make sure he's happy with her now, and that's strange, because what did his happiness matter to her before? It had meant next to nothing; a pawn to be sacrificed in the greater game of life and love.
But no matter how much Rin wants to be happy, for him, she can't. She can't help but cry despite the brightly shining sun. She can't help but be irritable around her sensei, even though all he's trying to do is comfort her. She can't help but feel resentment towards Kakashi and all he stands for, although he is doing his best to change his ways. She can't help but hate herself for being the weakling, for possibly being the one thing that lead to his death. She just can't.
And so that's why she's standing on her own, close to her sensei but in a whole other world. That's why she's ignoring Kakashi, not even bothering to be with him as he gets released from the hospital. That's why she'll remain at the tombstone long after the service ends, still crying, still hating. That's why she may not have the strength to even wake up tomorrow.
But can anyone blame her?
She can't help but want Obito to be back. To be hers. Like he always was and she never even knew, never even cared.
This year, Rin spends her Valentine's Day wishing for Obito instead.
