There were a lot of people already outside Hephaistion's room and they moved aside when they saw Alexander approach.
Nobody would meet his gaze as he moved down the line of people towards the room, he knew that something was horrible wrong.
As he entered the room his heart beat so fast and he dug his nails into the soft flesh of his palm.
Hephaistion looked like he was sleeping with his hands folded over his stomach except Alexander knew that he was not sleeping.
Alexander shakily touched the cold hands as if trying to warm them he wasn't going to cry he told himself but the more he said it the more tears he shed.
He hated himself for not being there when Hephaistion died, he hated Hephaistion for leaving him what was he supposed to do now he closed his eyes and tried not to think about it.
Suddenly the hand that he had been holding shot out and gripped hold of his wrist in a vice like grip that was like a thousand stabbing knives being stabbed in the wrist all at once.
Hephaistion's eyes shot open and stared at him
"Alexander," he whispered
Alexander woke up with a start; he was covered in sweat and was panting.
He felt the softness of his bed underneath his body and the sounds and smells of home.
He flopped back against the pillows, this had been the fifth night he had the same dream but each time it got more intense.
What did it mean, he rolled over and found Hephaistion's side empty.
"Hephaistion," he called
When he got no replied Alexander jumped up, the dream had scared the hell out of him and he wanted to find Hephaistion to see if he was a right.
He ran about the Palace looking for his childhood friend and every second he could not find him he feared the worst.
Suddenly he heard someone calling his name and he ran towards the calling.
He jumped into Hephaistion's arms when he saw him and cried in relief
"What's this for." Hephaistion asked laughing
"I was worried," Alexander replied "I thought something had happened to you."
This made Hephaistion laugh even more "Nothing is going to happen to Me." he said "What made you think that?"
Alexander pulled away and he to started to laugh "It was nothing," he said "just a stupid dream."
A couple years later Alexander was stood out side Hephaistion's room.
He knew what was going to happen next, he had seen it on and off he dug his nails in the palm of his hand.
He stepped inside.
It was how he had seen it Hephaistion looking peaceful asleep. He went over to the bed and places his hand on top of the cold hand and sat waiting for the hand to reach out and grab his wrist.
He sat and waited and waited but nothing happen.
He sat and wept at least in his dream Hephaistion always woke up.
