Six-year-old Luna Lovegood stared in frozen horror as a wizard advanced on her muggle mother. Luna was so terrified that she found she couldn't even move from the closet her mother had shoved her into. Then the wizard said the words that would haunt her dreams for several years, "Avada Kedavra." The was a rush of bright green light and Maybelle Lovegood fell to the floor, dead. The wizard smirked and disappeared in a loud pop. Luna stayed her hiding place, tightly clinging to the family cat, Artemis, unable to make a single sound. Several hours later, David Lovegood found her in the exact same position, the pure white cat struggling in her white hands.
Luna was deeply traumatized by her mother's murder, flinching every time she saw a wand, and refusing to speak to anyone. Her only comfort was Artemis and the belief that her mother was in heaven.
It wasn't until Luna received her Hogwarts letter that Luna started talking again. When Luna discovered that she possessed the very talent that had killed her mother, she found herself very eager to learn all she could so that she could get revenge for her late mother.
When Luna arrived at Hogwarts, she felt very uneasy around other magic users, subconsciously considering them all enemies, so she kept to herself and only really talked to Artemis. Banking on her father's reputation through his magazine, Luna began to behave exactly how the other students believed she would, further assuring that she would be left alone. It didn't take her long to acquire the nickname, Loony Lovegood.
Her life continued as she had carefully arranged it until a certain boy intruded quite rudely and changed her life permanently. She had been in the midst of her daily bout of being bullied, when HE intervened and saved her. This was a problem for the young blond. Luna was quite comfortable with her philosophy of all wizards being evil, and was quite put out to discover that there was at least one wizard who actually cared about anyone other than himself. HE had simply stepped in and protected her from her bullies, and then asked her if she was okay. HE had actually gone as far as escorting her to the hospital wing, despite her pleas that she was perfectly fine. After leaving her in the care of Madam Pomfrey, the school nurse, HE simply walked out of her life as neatly as HE had entered.
A week later, Luna bumped into him in the hallway. HE showed no recognition of her at all. HE simply helped her back to her feet and asked if she was alright. When she answered in the affirmative, HE merely nodded and continued on HIS way. From her experiences with HIM, Luna gathered that HE merely cared for people, especially if they might be hurt or in trouble. HE was a true hero – concerned about people and only desiring to help in whatever way HE could. Luna wanted to forget about HIM – HE was a contradiction to everything she had believed for five years – but Luna found that she couldn't forget HIS sweet voice when HE asked if she was alright, or the gentle look in HIS bright green eyes – the same exact color as the very curse which had stolen her mother's life. The more Luna watched HIM, the more she couldn't understand HIM. She didn't want to accept that HE genuinely cared about strangers, but Luna couldn't find a reason or excuse for HIM to do such things – there was no hidden motive that she could find. Against her will, Luna found herself starting to trust again, even if she didn't trust anyone other than the sweet, green-eyed savior of the wizarding world.
Well, what did you think?
