Because
Sometimes, "because" was a perfectly good reason.

"For you."
Tohru blinked sky-blue irises rapidly, looking blankly from the bouquet of white lilies to Hatsuharu's shaded brown oculars, then back again. She noticed, absently, that Momiji seemed to be lingering in the doorway with biggest face-splitting grin on his face (although, she really had no idea why on earth he was here), but in all actuality that wasn't as baffling as the flowers.
"W-What?" Tohru stammered rather intelligently, cheeks blooming apple red.
Frazzled, she noticed too that Kyou was fuming a bright red and glaring at the younger Sohman pointedly, red eyes screaming murder with an obviously amused Shigure holding him back. Yuki had dropped his fine china cup of tea and was rigourously busying himself with the task of cleaning up the broken porcelain as he shot amethyst glances towards the two of them, mild curiousity bright in those lavender-hued orbs of his.
Hatsuharu looked at her crossly, and Tohru knew that he hated to say more than necessary, let alone repeat himself.
But then he did.
"The flowers; they're for you."
Tohru took the bouquet slowly, tentatively, and ignored the light spark when her fingertips brushed against Hatsuharu's much rougher ones. Scrambling for something to say that wouldn't make her seem like a complete spaz, she managed a half-choked, half-stammered, "W-why?"
Hatsuharu shrugged. Pursed his thin, pale lips.
"Because."
"Because? Because why? I didn't... Did I do something for you? Is it my birthday? I'm pretty sure I didn't forget my birthday, that only happened once and I'd been studying for finals a lot and there was this big project due, but I haven't forgotten it since, and I'm pretty sure I didn't, but maybe I did now that you're here and..." The brunette could've rambled for hours, but Hatsuharu stopped her with a single, upraised finger on her pink, rose-bud lips.
"Because," Hatsuharu repeated. Tohru reflected that this was the most she though she'd ever heard him talk directly to her in the span of an hour, let alone ten minutes.
"Because," Tohru echoed, nodding dumbly.
More shocking still, Hartsuharu smiled. It was different from his other smiles, though. Rough yet gentle, the warmth in the crooked quirking of his lips all aimed towards her. Tohru shifted from foot to foot nervously, feeling her heart flutter subtly in her chest.
"Ice cream?"
Tohru stared a little longer at Hatsuharu's smiling, handsome face, before looking down at a hand that was almost reaching for hers. Without realizing it, she extended her arm and her fingers laced automatically with his.
"I'd...I'd love some," Tohru said, finally smiling herself.
Sometimes, "because" was a perfectly good reason.
