Tohru woke with a start in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. She lay in bed panting slightly and trying to work out why she'd woken up. Turning over onto her side she looked at the clock, it was nearly half past midnight and she could feel tiredness creeping up on her. 'I'd better go back to sleep, or tomorrow I won't do very well in my maths test' she thought to herself.

It was no good, no matter what position she lay in she just couldn't get comfortable and frustration welled up within her. Tohru decided to try having a nice warm drink. Drinking a cup of tea before bed usually made her feel content and sleepy. She shuffled into her house slippers and a dressing gown, then quietly slipped downstairs, trying not to wake anyone up as she did so.

'What are you doing up, Tohru-kun?' Shigure asked as she slunk into the kitchen. Turning around Tohru realised that Shigure-san and Hatori-san were sat at the dining table drinking tea and smoking. She froze, feeling guiltily like a naughty child who has been caught doing something she shouldn't.

'I couldn't sleep.' She admitted, blushing slightly. At Shigure's gesture she sat down with him and Hatori disappeared briefly before reappearing with a third cup of tea.

'Well since you're awake why don't you tell me about that game of badminton you said you were going to play with Hana-san and Uo-san? Kyo-kun was so noisy this evening I didn't get to hear about it.'

Tohru's eyes widened in delight that Shigure had remembered that particular detail and she launched into a detailed description of the fun she'd had and how she'd even managed to persuade Kyo to join in, although she tactfully remarked that she hadn't realised how bad his and Momiji's teamwork skills were. Shigure snickered at that. Gradually her eyelids got heavy and she was lulled to sleep by the two men's low voices as they quietly talked about the latest enormous stack of photographs Aya had sent to Shigure. The smell of cigarettes lingered on them even though they'd stopped smoking when she came in. The smell was soothing, reminding her of her mother.

Shigure spread a blanket over the sleeping girl and patted her gently before he tiptoed up to his own bed.

Tohru woke up the next morning disoriented and a bit uncomfortable, but nice and warm. As she sat up and realised where she was she remembered what had happened and felt a warm glow as the kindness of her host was once again proven to her.
