It's short, too.
Sirius' biggest regret was that James died hating him.
He didn't regret any of the events that had caused the hate, only the fact that James had died full of hate towards the man he had called his best friend.
Sirius heard the phone ring and apparated downstairs to pick it up.
"Hello?" he said into the receiver.
"Lily told me." James said, and Sirius' heart almost stopped. He and Lily had sworn they would never talk about that ever again, especially not to James. Definitely not to James.
"Look, James, mate," Sirius began. "That was when we were in school, it didn't mean anything, it…"
"I don't give a shit what it meant, Black." James cut him off in a voice that sent shivers down Sirius' spine. "It sill happened, didn't it? And for that, for what you did… I'm gonna kill you."
The phone line went dead, and Sirius almost prayed that this was a bad dream. He didn't know how much worse it was going to get.
Earlier that night
Lily took the letter from the owl, sand stroked it before letting it fly off. Unrolling the parchment, she quickly read the letter and got out her wand.
"Geminio." She murmured, going over to her bedside table, she put the original in the drawer and put the other under her letter to Sirius. She would send it later.
"Hey, Lily." She turned around to see James had just stepped out of the bathroom.
"Is something wrong?" he asked, walking over to her.
"No, nothing's wrong." She replied, smiling falsely.
"You sure?" James asked. "You don't look too happy."
Lily sighed.
"I think…"she said. "I think… I think now is the time to tell you something I should have told you about before we got married." She paused and looked at her husband.
"Go on." James said.
"Well…" Lily took a deep breath. "Wheniwasfourteenihadababywithsiriusandthatswhyitookmostoftheyearoff."
"I didn't hear a word you just said." James assured her.
"Okay…" Lily took another breath. "You know, in fourth year, when I was hardly there the whole time?"
James nodded.
"You were badly ill and had to go to St Mungo's, right?"
Lily shook her head.
"Well, I went to St Mungo's, but it was because…" She paused, wishing she didn't have to finish her sentence. "Because I was pregnant."
James' mouth hit the floor and Lily started crying.
"I'm so sorry I didn't tell you…" she sobbed.
"No, it's okay." James said, putting his arm around her. "Shh, don't cry, it's okay."
"I would have said…" Lily sniffed. "But me and Sirius swore we wouldn't…"
"What has Sirius got to do with this?" James asked, his voice gaining an edge.
Lily paled.
"He was the father." She whispered.
That night the Potters died, and one of them died hating his best friend. Sirius knew he could live with that, but he would give anything, anything and everything, to know that James Potter hadn't died hating his wife.
