Chapter 1

Author's P.O.V

Janallee was staring at the sky. Her metal forearm was shielding her eyes from the rays of sun boring down on the orphanage lawn. Her hair was splayed out around her, giving of the impression of a long, white, veil. Usually it was covered, but in the safety of her home, she could wear it out, even if only for a little while.

Her eyes were underneath sunglasses, so not to show of her odd colorings. She wondered what it would be like to go beyond the walls of the orphanage. All her life she had lived on the premises, not even going to the market like all of the other girls. It made her sad to think that the world around her contained so many mysteries just outside her reach. She wanted to know those from the many books she had read, Janallee was very naive to the worries and the brokenness of the world.

Janallee had been raised in the orphanage since she was 2. The caretaker at the orphanage had said that government officials had found her crawling around a bomb sight, bleeding to always pained her to remember the way she was, with only half a left arm, and devoid of a right leg. She had said that the people that found her took pity on her, even though she was the enemy. So, in desperation, they found a secluded village and brought her to the orphanage there, asking if they could take care of her. And so there she was, a small girl with an arm and leg missing, being raised in secret. She had never really grown and so her height remained at a stubborn 4'8. She was comfortable in this height, but if someone commented on the subject, she became very temperamental.

Janallee's P.O.V

"Jana darling, please come inside," , my caretaker, popped her head outside, "And remember to cover your hair up. Someone is here to see you."

What? Someone here to see me? Why would they. I never leave this place.

I wasn't going to be fooled for a second. No one in there right mind would want to see me….well besides my doctor, but she was out of town on business.

So...maybe I became instantly popular.

Yeah… right. I grunted, lifting my self off the ground. I grabbed the thick hair cover that was stuffed in my pocket. Securing it with some pins, I made my way inside. I hobbled with each step. The week before I had gotten a new set of automail limbs, complete with the excruciating pain of connecting the nerves. I had grown an inch, so with that in mind, they ordered a new set from a small shop in Rockbell, for they wanted to keep it off the radar.I grumbled, for this was my way of complaining. "Janallee? Are you coming?

"Yes," I managed to say. My teeth were practically clamped together. I finally made it to the living room. But when I got there, my mouth dropped open, for someone was there that I didn't expect to see ever again.
