Prologue

Jazz Williams was seven years old when she watched her first pokémon battle. From the moment the contestants stepped foot on the arena, she was enchanted. She loved everything about it: the way the pokémon moved, the way they interacted, the companionship between trainer and pokémon. She thought it was beautiful, and ever since she saw that first battle, she wanted to be a part of it.

Her father was the leader of the Saffron City Pokémon Gym, and for years Jazz would run home after school to watch her father battle trainers and train his pokémon. At first her parents had thought it was a faze, but after watching her do this for three years, they finally caught her a pokémon of her own.

On her tenth birthday, she was welcomed home from school by a tiny Eevee, who was sitting on her front porch with a birthday ribbon around his neck. She named him Maestro, and wasted no time before taking him out to start training. The pair became so close that not long after receiving the pokémon, it evolved into a slender and powerful Espeon. It was after this evolution had taken place that Jazz realized her new psychic pokémon had a unique power: he could read Jazz's thoughts. This was something Jazz had never experienced before, not even with any her father's highly trained psychic pokémon.

After the two of them learned to use this ability, they became unbeatable. Jazz no longer needed to communicate verbally to give Maestro commands, so when Maestro attacked, none of her opponents knew what was coming. Their battles rarely lasted more than five minutes, and it soon became common for people to start to place bets on how long these battles would last, or how much damage the opponent could inflict on Maestro before the end.

As soon as Jazz reached fifteen, she packed her bags and left home, itching to start her journey. She made her way to Pewter City, the first city in the Pokémon League Challenge, and started battling. She beat the first four gyms easily, and it is here, on her way to the Fuchsia City Gym, that we finally join our hero on her adventure.
