My Last Breath

"Hey Donnie, can I see that?" April and I were in the lab. I was fixing Leo's T-Phone, when April pointed to a gadget on the table. It was one of the Kraang's laser guns.

"Sure, April," I said, and handed it to her "but be careful."

She held the gun in her hand, then a playful grin ran across her face.

"Kraang will make the one known as Donatello surrender to Kraang!" She said in a Kraang-y vioce. I raised my eyebrow at her.

"April, drop the gun." I warned.

"You'll have to catch me first." She said, then ran out the lab and into the kitchen. I raced after her, letting her get a five-second head-start.

I chased her into the living room, where Leo was watching Space Heroes.

"Well, that's something you don't see everyday." He said. I ignored him and continued to follow her until we reached the dojo, where I jumped and tackled her to the ground, growling playfully. She gasped, struggling to get out of my grasp. She struggled for a minute or to then stopped.

"Alright, I give in." She said, defeated. But as soon as I let her up, she pushed my plastron. I fell to the ground, and she lied down next to me. "That was fun." She said. I looked at her. I felt as though there was something else she needed to say.

"Donnie." she began, "I know that you have...certain feelings for me, and I appreciate that, I really do, but..."

"April, I know. You don't like me...in that way." I finished.

"But," she continued, ignoring me entirely, "I want to give 'us' a try. I'm done hiding my feelings about you. You're kind, considerate, everything I'd ever want. Every time I'm in danger, you're always there to protect me."

"But I'm not...human. I can't exactly take you on a proper date, or..."

"Donnie. I don't care. I don't care about your form. I don't care about what you look like. I only care about how you are on the inside. I know that was super cheesy, but it's true, and I won't take it back. Its not like every guy is willing to jump off a plane to save a girl he didn't know. You were always there for me, no matter what, and..."

"And I always will be. I love you, April. From the first time I saw you, I knew you were the one." I said. I can't believe I admitted that, but every word rang with truth. I was hers.

But was she mine?

As I looked up into her clear blue eyes, it seemed she sensed my doubt.

"Donnie, I love you. And I want to be with you. Forever."

"You mean, like, dating?" I asked. I was still confused. What was a beautiful teenage girl asking out a mutant turtle?

"Yes I mean that, 'shell for brains'", she said, using my quote. "It won't be normal, but we'll find a way." She said.

Then she leaned closer, wrapping her warm, soft arms around my neck, and pressed a kiss to my lips. It was...amazing. All I imagined it would be...and more. I loved her. I would do anything to keep her alive.

As our lips parted, I looked into her eyes.

"Yes, April. We will find a way. I promise."

Until my last breath, I will protect her. And we will stay together.

Forever.
