Chilly, sunless breezes twirl her long hair into a wild mess as she stands on the rough dirt road, unmoving, her arms curled around herself to stay warm. Two sights lay before her. On one side of the road is the sprawling city, the bustle of merchants and travelers and soldiers, getting denser and denser closer to the palace. On the other side, the population is thinner, ramshackle homes and huts giving way to beaten fields and eventually to carefully maintained croplands. On one side, Lyn hears Hector's voice, laughing and calling out her name with his cheery, confident grin, but the kindness is still there. Behind his brusque exterior, Hector is respectful and considerate, and Lyn knows she can't resist him; she revels in his touch and his words and his warmth.
On the other side, she hears, so very faintly, the whisper and hum of grass and sky. It is very muffled by the nearby city and the controlled crops and war-beaten dirt. But it is, undoubtedly, still there, and the breath of that free, wild air is like wine to her. In her mind's eye, she can see herself soaring across the plains, twirling in the sun, relishing every inch of the land where she belongs.
But she must choose. Somehow. Either way, a piece of her heart will be ripped out, for she cannot leave Hector's side, but she cannot live away from the plains. She wishes, even begs Mother Sky and Father Earth that she could have them both. Closing her eyes sadly, Lyn stays in the middle of the road, ignoring the fading day and the rising chills. She doesn't move for a long, long time, wondering if her life can ever be all she wanted.
