Fleeting

him

It's only at night when it happens; only when the light is completely eclipsed by the inexorable blanket of darkness does she slip into his room and they come together. He don't speak (words would make it real) and she doesn't either but they do moan and groan and hiss like savage animals, pulling and tugging as long lost lovers would. Except they're not in love, she's not old enough to know how cruel the passage of time can be and he's too careful and meticulous to ever lose anything.

He doesn't acknowledge her during the day, preferring to keep their dirty little secret beneath the sheets they sweat and whimper on. Denial is his best friend and truth is his enemy; the rules are his lover but breaking them is his mistress. Rinoa is his savior and Yuffie is his dirtiest sin and it's so fucked up that all Leon can do sometimes is sit back with the strongest liquor he can find and wonder what happened to his life.

her

Yuffie doesn't love him. Nope, nope, nope. Doesn't love him at all. Doesn't dream about him when she's not sharing his bed, doesn't worry about him constantly when he disappears for hours without telling anyone.

Yuffie pretends a lot. She pretends so the others don't have to and they don't have to smile fake smiles and act like they're happy with their lives. So she does, and spends her days dancing on bleeding toes and chasing non-existent rainbows with a man she does not love.

She likes the sex; likes the way he makes her writhe with pleasure and moan in euphoria. So what if they don't speak about it and don't publicly acknowledge their relationship? Doesn't mean they're screwed up. Just unconventional.

Besides, Yuffie's good at pretending.

them

Sometimes after long days they sit on rooftops and watch the stars and the moon and the world they've worked so hard to repair and talk about everything but what they want to talk about. Her voice is lively and animated; sliding up and down octaves while eyes blaze with passion and love she refuses to accept. He doesn't really talk (never does) but likes the way her voice makes him forget and he pretends that he's not sleeping (in love) with the beautiful ninja. Rinoa's still alive and the world is perfect and all he wants to do is sing and dance in the streets.

But he's no good at pretending and all too soon his world comes crashing down and he's falling...falling...falling until all he can see are the bright eyes and dark hair of a girl he can't identify anymore.

Yuffie sees the far away look in his eyes and knows that it's not her voice he's hearing right now. But she's so used to pretending she doesn't even notice and just keeps on talking, talking, talking...

They're terrified of the truth and each other but what frightens them most are themselves and their own selfish desires. He continues to dream of the ambiguous girl and she keeps on pretending (she doesn't love him). No matter what they do, they can't change each other and they can't change themselves.

In the end all they have are broken hearts and damp sheets.
