I'd found him out there in the rain. The poor thing was curled up against a brick wall in an alleyway, shivering violently. Brother and I were passing by on our way back to headquarters so he could check in with the colonel, but by the time we'd made it halfway there, it was pouring. Brother had already darted for the next measly bit of shelter, ducking under an awning near the alleyway when I heard it. The soft, sad meows called to me and I had to go see for myself.
I rounded the corner and there he was, a tiny, helpless little black kitten soaked to the bone. My heart went out to the little guy; who knows how long he'd been stuck here like this, all cold and miserable. I knew right then that I had to help him, no matter what Brother said.
It took some coaxing but after a minute or so I managed to convince him to take shelter in my armor. I picked him up and gently let him in, making sure the little guy didn't brush my blood seal. Once he was settled I replaced my helmet and stepped out towards the main road. If I'd been in my body I'd have certainly kept him warm in my arms, and the thought of that saddened me a bit. Poor thing would be cold all the way back to headquarters.
Eventually I found Brother leaning against the side of the next building, tapping his foot impatiently. When he noticed me he gave me an odd look, and as we continued our trudge through the downpour I knew that I'd be found out soon.
At least then this kitten would have a chance and a warm place out of the rain.
