Remus PoV;
The first thing I was aware of was warmth like I hadn't felt in years. I blinked my eyes open and groaned as a yellow light hit my eyes. 'Where am I?' I wondered aloud, only to hear my voice echo back to me. I tried to comb through my last memories only to come up with flashes of fighting, pain and an overwhelming darkness.
I sat up, only to feel a throbbing ache in my head and nausea take over my senses. After taking a moment to clear the dizziness, I started to take in my surroundings. I was in a forest clearing. Tall, green, trees surrounded me and a small dirt path lead deeper into the woods. Even though I didn't recognise anything around me, I felt like I knew this place. That somehow I'd returned here after being away for so long.
I slowly got to my feet and tried to make sense of my surroundings. Without many other options I set off down the path, further into the forest. After a few minutes the trees started thinning and a beautiful village appeared on the horizon, bathed in a golden light. I set off towards the small cluster of houses, revelling in the peacefulness of this world. With every step I took, the fear that had been building up inside me since Voldemort's rise to power; melted away until I felt almost weightless.
That name triggered something in my memory and flashes of a battle and a green light filled my head. It all came flooding back. The mask, the fear and the cry of Avada Kadavra, that had ended my earthly existence only moments ago.
I began to run, flat out, towards the village. I didn't stop until I was in the safety of one of the small streets. I finally felt safe. How, I did not know, but I knew that he couldn't get to me here. He would never reach this place.
I squinted in the sun as a couple started towards me from way down the street. A rush of familiarity filled me and I knew that for the first time in years I was seeing the two people who I had missed the greatest from the first war. I sprinted towards them and hugged the young woman as tightly as I could, feeling a strong hand grip my shoulder. I breathed in the scent of two of my best friends and in that moment I felt more at peace than I ever could remember.
"Moony." Lily laughed (Oh how I had missed that sound). "Moony it's okay you're home now." I reluctantly let go of her waist and gazed into her large, emerald eyes.
"It's good to see you old friend." James said, squeezing my shoulder slightly.
"It's good to see you too Prongs." I replied softly and sincerely. "So, what happens now?"
"We go back to the cottage. Padfoot has been waiting for you." Lily replied. "He says that we all have some catching up to be doing and he won't start without you." We started down the street, Lily leading the way and James bringing up the rear.
"So wait. Sirius has waited two years to tell you what has been happening?" I asked suddenly registering her comment.
"Time moves quickly here." James replied. "He has only been here two days."
"It's killed him, trying to keep everything a secret too." Lily added. "He's been practically bouncing in his seat and trying to stall us at the same time. It's been quite comical to witness." We all laughed at that and continued down the road.
We had been separated for almost 17 years. For James and Lily it had only been 17 days. It didn't matter. The only thing that mattered was that we were finally reunited and off for tea with Sirius.
After all, friendship is forever, and continues, even after death.
