Can't...stop...writing...Makorra...
I blame YouTube videos -.-'
He catches up to her just as they're leaving. Aside from Tenzin, who's dressed in his normal airbender robes, Korra is the only one in anything other than black; her blue Water Tribe parka stands out in a field of black metalbender uniforms.
"What the hell do you think you're doing here?" snaps Chief Bei Fong, looking supremely irritated.
Normally the sight of such a powerful authority figure would make the street rat back down, but instead of walking away Mako completely ignores the metalbender and stalks over to Korra.
"Mako!" she exclaims, very obviously surprised. She sends a semi-pleading look over her shoulder as she allows herself to be towed away from the party. "Um, what are you doing here?"
"You can't do this," he tells her firmly.
A brown eyebrow rises wryly. "I'm sorry; what?"
"You can't just go off and fight the Equalists!" Mako continues, gesturing wilder than he normally would, "You can't beat them!"
Her lips purse. "Maybe not by myself," the Avatar snaps, yanking her arm from the firebender's grasp, "Hence why the police and airbending master are coming."
"It won't be enough."
"Tell that to Chief Bei Fong," she dares haughtily, tossing her hair. "Why do you even care, anyway? The last time you saw me you told me that I was a horrible Avatar."
"Er," he begins intelligently, "About that."
"Korra," Bei Fong snaps loudly.
"Just a second!" Korra calls back, then turns to Mako. "You have thirty seconds to give me a good explanation."
"I was worried!" he exclaims. Her lips open into a silent O, but he's started ranting and now he can't stop. "I am worried—about you, and that you won't be able to take on Amon, and that you—you won't come back."
The last sentence is said in a whisper, and that token of admission says more to Korra than any words can. She wants to comfort him; let him know that she won't be one of the people leaving him forever. But she can't lie to him. There is truth in worrying that the Avatar and her companions will not return from the battle, and though Korra does not fear death, she fears leaving everything she's collected in this world. She fears leaving him.
"I promise," she whispers, "I will try to come back." Spontaneously, she leans onto her tip-toes and presses her lips to Mako's. Though her eyes are closed, relishing in the softness, the vulnerability in his lips, she can imagine that shocked expression on his face, the widening of his eyes. She doesn't let go; not until she feels him kiss her back. They hold onto each other, promises exchanged more powerful than words.
When they part Korra looks up through her thick lashes and murmurs, "Just in case." Mako's eyes are half-lidded and she uses that to her advantage; turning on her heel and walking briskly away before he can protest again.
Tenzin looks like he's going to have an aneurysm and Chief Bei Fong looks as uncomfortable as humanly possible, but neither say anything as she saunters through the metalbenders to the boats. Just before they push off, Korra turns back.
Mako's still not completely recovered; jaw still hanging open in a rather undignified manner. She throws him a flirty wink, a hint of her confident façade, then turns away.
She has Equalist ass to kick.
Ending = eh, but what can you do? This is just my theory on how The Epic Kiss will happen; something like Aang and Katara's (EW).
Anyway, leave a review!
