Author's note: this is an adaptation of Lord Alfred Tennyson's famous poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade". It is based on the charge Faramir and his knights made to recapture Osgiliath in the "Return of the King" movie. It may or may not have any basing in J.R.R. Tolkien's literary work.

The Charge of the Knights of Gondor

Half a league, half a league

Half a league onward,

All on the field of Death

Rode the two score and one

"Forward, the knights of Gondor!

Charge for the city!" he said,

Into the city of Death

Rode the two score and one.

"Forward, the Knights of Gondor!"

Was there a man dismay'd?

Not tho' the soldier knew

Someone had maddened:

Theirs' not to make reply,

Theirs' not to reason why,

Theirs' but to do and die:

Into the city of Death

Rode the two score and one.

Arrows to the left of them

Arrows to the right of them

Arrows in front of them

Volley'd and thundered

Stormed at with bow-fire and stone

Boldly they rode and well,

Into the jaws of Death,

Into the mouth of Hell

Rode the two score and one.

Flash'd all their swords bare,

Flash'd as they turned in air

Slicing the archers there,

Charging an army, while

All the land wondered

Plunged in the Orcs foul reek

Right thro' the line they broke,

Orc and Easterling

Reel'd from the sword stroke

Shatter'd and sunder'd.

Then they rode back, but not,

Not the two score and one.

Arrows to the left of them,

Arrows to the right of them,

Arrows behind them,

Volley'd and thundered,

Stormed at with bow-fire and stone,

While horse and hero fell,

They that had fought so well

Came thro' the jaws of Death,

Back from the mouth of Hell

All that was left of them,

Left of two score and one.

When can their glory fade?

O the wild charge they made!

All the land wonder'd.

Honour the charge they made!

Honour the Knights of Gondor,

Noble two score and one!
