The Wind Dog

"No."

"Please! Please, Lord Sesshoumaru!"

"Foolish human! Stop pestering milord with your nagging! And put that creature down!" A dull throb began to manifest behind his eyes.

"Jakken. Be quiet."

Lord Sesshomaru of the West continued to walk forward along the path, as if the conversation he was currently having with his ward wasn't happening. She had been begging for hours. This human he had collected was impossible, and the direction his inner monologue was taking was not helping.

'I understand why she wants to keep the thing.'

'You should let her keep it. She's a child. A meer 7 years old. She needs to learn responsibility, and it would occupy her. Give her a companion.'

He felt the ache behind his eyes worsen. His beast was, as per usual, correct. Always the voice of reason… but he didn't think that she realized what the little beast was. The pup was no simple dog- it was a demon. A kaze inu- wind dog.

However, the taijya that traveled with his disgraceful half-breed brother kept the company of a fire cat, and she had proven to be very useful. Loyal, and a gentle friend. An efficient guardian. A weapon to protect her mistress. If he allowed Rin to keep the small demon and bond with it, then he would have a far more reliable way of guarding her when he was away. Jakken was a piss-poor excuse for a protector, and Ah-Un was too simple-minded to be effective without a master giving directions. Once she began to approach her majority, he could even begin to teach her how to defend herself and use the wind dog as a battle companion. It was decided then.

"Rin." The small human paused in her steps, black puppy dangling precariously from her arms. It looked very content for a being that was facing potential death if the Daiyoukai before him decided to end the conversation permanently. His gaze went from the wind dog to the hopeful face and wide eyed gaze of his ward.

"Y-yes, Lord Sesshoumaru?"

"You may keep the wind dog." A gleeful shout erupted from the small girl before him. "You are solely responsible for its care and training."

"Yes, Lord Sesshomaru! Thank you!"

As he turned and resumed his endless march down the path, searching out the location of his nemesis, he began the process of trying to block out all of the noise Rin's celebrating and Jakken's admonishments caused. He needed to keep his senses trained on the surrounding area. It would not due to allow anything to sneak up and attack them.

Almost an hour later he heard the voice of his ward debating what she would name her new friend. A moment later it seemed she was settled when he heard a quiet 'that's perfect!' from behind him. The small girl ran around him, pint-sized puppy bouncing in her arms, legs and tail dangling uncomfortably. It seemed...scared, almost, if he was reading the body language correctly. A far cry from its demeanor earlier.

Rin lifted the dog over her head in front of him as if presenting it as a gift.

"Lord Sesshoumaru, meet our new friend…." A pause for dramatic effect. She had begun to pick up on his mannerisms. He should be proud….so why was he filled with unease?

"...Inuyasha!"

A/N: if the response is good then I'm considering writing a second chapter where the Inuyashas meet. Thank you for reading, and please review!
