In every great friendship, there is doubt, anger, hurt, and backstabbing. But mixed in with that is trust, happiness, and the meshing of two people who are completely different.
It happens in five stages.
.
stage one: curiosity
Samantha Puckett wasn't a particular curious person.
If she was an animal she would probably be one of the feline species perfectly content to lazy around, hardly taking any notice of anyone but herself.
Then Caterina Valentine came along.
Cat reeked of normality gone wrong.
She wore high heels with jeans, painted her nails like a rainbow, and hugged hobos on a daily basis.
If were anyone else Sam would have dismissed her without a second glance.
But she was curious of the redhead.
So she stayed.
.
stage two: charting the territory
Sam had once told Cat that everything about her was uncharted territory.
Cat's eyes had brightened, and she said, "My friend's name is Tori, but with an 'I' instead of a 'y" she was new at my old school; she got in because she was singing about shining. Jade didn't like her though. They have issues."
Sam wanted to tell Cat that she had issues.
But Cat was still strange to her, so Sam stayed quiet and listened to yet another weird story about Cat's brother.
Mapping her out was going to be harder than Sam thought.
.
stage three: familiarity
Sam realized very quickly that Cat was a very physical person.
She gave big bear hugs when she saw Sam, she grabbed her arm during movie night when she was scared, and she tugged on her arm whenever she wanted to get her attention.
So when Sam found the red head crying because her brother had gotten sent to yet another special hospital, Sam awkwardly wrapped her arms around Cat and squeezed.
Cat relaxed and squeezed back and suddenly Sam could see the use in this whole hugging thing.
.
stage four: vulnerability
"Do you want to hear a fairytale?"
Sam (knowing that complete rebuttal would be lost on Cat) nodded, resigning herself to yet another retelling of The Little Mermaid.
"Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who was adored by everyone, everyone except her chosen prince."
Sam perked up, her interest peaked.
"her chosen prince was bewitched by a wicked witch, leaving the poor princess all alone."
Sam opened her mouth to say something but Cat plowed on,
"However the witch's spell didn't last long, because another princess, more of a queen actually, came along and broke the witch hold over the prince. The witch and the princess had to watch as the queen and the prince got their happy ending and the witch retreated into the shadows determined to erase all memory of the handsome prince. However the princess never recovered and spent her time dreaming of the day that the prince would come back to her. The end."
Sam was quiet for a moment and then said, "That's not the Little Mermaid."
Cat shook her head, "I know, the little mermaid had a happy ending, this story doesn't."
"Maybe the story might have a happy ending." Sam said.
Cat turned to her, her big brown eyes filled with sadness.
"No it won't." she murmured quietly.
.
stage five: clicking together.
Sam still isn't a very curious person.
She still has jaded views on the world, hates the word panties, and loves her meat.
Cat still is a curiosity to her.
She still paints her nails like a rainbow, she still plays dress up, and she still has hair the color of red velvet cupcakes.
But somehow they still fit together.
