"Can you at least give me a hint of what it is?" Dean called from the couch. Cas was standing in the kitchen of Rufus's cabin, clanking pots and pans, and a few times Dean saw small clouds of flour hitting the floor.
Cas turned to look at Dean with a blank expression. "No," he said flatly, then returned to his clanking.
Dean just rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to his movie 'Hell Razor II'. He must have dozed off at some point during the middle half of the movie, because the next thing he knew was he was being woken by the loud song playing as the credits rolled up the screen. Sitting up straight Dean rubbed the sleep from his eyes, turned the TV off, and looked in the direction of the kitchen. There was at least a whole bag worth of flour dumped on the floor, egg shells and pecans scattered across the counter, and the oven was left on with the door wide open.
"Cas!" Dean called, looking around the room. Where the hell did he go now? He thought to himself, getting up from the couch. He made his way to the kitchen, closed the oven and turned it off. The whoosh of wings made Dean turn to see Cas standing right next to him. He was so close that Dean could feel the heat from the angel's breath on his neck. "Cas, what did I tell you about personal space?"
"Sorry," Cas apologized, backing up slightly. "I have completed the surprise. As you can see, it was a very troubling task," he explained, gesturing an arm toward the mess.
"Yeah, well we can't all be Betty Crocker," Dean laughed. Cas just stood there with a puzzled expression, unsure of who Dean was even talking about. "So where's the surprise?"
Cas pointed to the round wooden table where a pecan pie sat in the center. In the middle of the pie was a candle in the shape of the number 33. Dean's jaw dropped in astonishment. How did he know what today was? Dean wondered. He never mentioned it to Cas, but then again angels have been around a long time and they always seem to know everything about everyone, including their favorite kinds of pie.
"Happy birthday, Dean," Cas congratulated with that little half-smile that Dean loved.
Dean turned toward him with a big smile and embraced Cas in a slightly awkward bear-hug. "Thank you," he whispered in the collar of Cas's trenchcoat.
THE END.
