"Is he dead?" asked a high-pitched voice, greediness dripping from each word like saliva.
"Does he smell dead, stupid?" answered a deep growl, followed by a kick that sent a white-hot light of pain through Dean's body before his consciousness spiraled back into darkness.
"Doesn't look alive, if you ask me" whined the Jikininki, crawling towards the man that had fallen through the rotten roof of the abandoned temple like a gift from the Gods. With its scrawny limbs and its grotesquely bloated belly it looked like a giant spider, ready to suck out its prey.
"You know we can't feast on him as long as he's breathing. How many times…"
"Yes. Right."
Its belly was convulsing, giving birth to a sound that could've been an insane laughter. Or maybe it was weeping.
Sam didn't really care.
He just prayed that at least this part of their glorious plan would work.
A burning arrow dipped in holy oil pinned one Jikiniki to the ground. The supernatural fire consumed the creature with a hungry roar, leaving the other one blinded – an easy target for the second arrow.
"Blessed be Bobby's library", coughed Sam, "and the thick skull of my bull-headed brother."
