Castiel clenched his teeth, sucking in a sharp breath as he tore his fingers through his hair.
Dean's panicked voice was coming through louder than usual, Castiel knew he was being chased, but he had to stay back, keep away from his charge, however badly it hurt him…
All answering his call would do is hurt him, hurt them both. He couldn't let Dean be hurt, and putting himself so close would only steer the monsters in towards Dean.
Dean's prayer crackled as it surged in over Castiel's conciousness, he could hear, could feel the danger Dean was in. He knew exactly what was happening, he could feel how heavily Dean's tread fell against the dirt, could see through his eyes as the embodiments of formerly-deceased Wendigos and Wraiths circled and closed in.
Castiel screwed his tearing eyes shut and belted out a deep rumbling cry as one of the monsters lurched in, but closing his lids did nothing, the image seared into his perception even brighter so…
Dean matched Castiel's scream as he flung his arm out, slashing at the snarling beasts.
It went on for merely a few moments, for Dean's adrenaline helped him to flash through the kills. Castiel felt the hot liquid slide down his stubbled cheeks as Dean's insistent prayer started anew.
