~My first fic let me know what you think~
~I'm not for animal violence this is just based on something that happened to me when I was a kid.~
Darry's POV
I've always been worried about Ponyboy, even when we were little.
One day we were playing ball in the backyard and the ball flew over the fence into the neighbor's yard and they had one hell of a mean dog. Me and Soda went to ask our neighbor for our ball back and we didn't realize Pony wasn't behind us. Pony was only five so I don't think he knew any better when he squeezed through the hole in the fence, he also didn't know how mean the dog was. Some say it killed a burglar once. Pony was trying to get the ball back because it was his fault for throwing it over the fence(I may have gotten on the football team but Pony had quite an arm). He didn't do it on purpose but he wanted to be responsible.
When we were asking our neighbor for our ball back we started to hear Pony scream. Hearing the scream from the back yard our neighbor screamed, saying our brother was getting attacked by her dog. Soda ran to the phone and called 911 knowing he might be seriously injured. I noticed our neighbors umbrella and immediately grabbed it and rushed to the backyard. When I got there the dog was hovering over Ponyboy who was bleeding from various cuts all over him. I didn't hesitate. I ran straight towards the dog and hit him repeatedly with the umbrella. Now paying attention to me it lunged itself right towards me and sank his teeth into my shoulder. The only thing I could think of was about how bad Ponyboy was hurt. I wanted to check on my injured little brother. I was lucky there was a rock decent enough to struck the dog with and even more lucky the dog was unconscious after I did that.
When I ran up to Pony he was he was still curled into a ball holding our ball in his arms. He said he was sorry for throwing it over the fence, getting his blood on it and was also blaming himself for getting my shoulder injured. I started to cry and wrapped him in my arms. I had such a sweet and thoughtful little brother. He put his well-being aside and went to get my ball back. I told him it was all right and everything would be okay, saying that until the ambulance came. The doctors fixed us up saying we were lucky. Last time they got a call about someone who got injured by that dog spent a week in the hospital.
That day still haunts me to this day I could have lost my baby brother. I guess when I became Soda's and Pony's guardian I got a little overprotective, being strict and worrying about Pony a lot. I couldn't help it. That one time had effected me to this day. He probably thinks I'm being hard on him but I can't help it. He still gets into trouble sometimes. I just wish I could be as close as we were when we were little. It scares me that he could get taken from me I guess that's why I'm so strict but I would do anything for my little brothers.
