"Well" quipped Marissa finally, after a pause of awkward length.
"No, not well at all" retorted Seth, his sarcasm a façade for the jealousy and anger he struggled to contain. The silhouetted figures of Ryan and Summer continued to caress one another, and from their position just meters away from the pool house it was disturbing how much detail their two alleged partners could make out.
"First Luke and now Ryan!" moaned Marissa, in the angst ridden voice that had tempted her boyfriends to stray. "What's wrong with me?!".
Seth fought the temptation to inform Marissa that, actually, she was a stuck up melodramatic loser, instead wondering what it was that has lead Summer away from him. Sure, Ryan was more confident and self assured, more athletic rather than academic, as he was- but hadn't Summer seen in him, Seth, something worthwhile?
"Well?!" exclaimed Marissa, repeating what was a seemingly appropriate word. "What are you going to do?!" Seth pondered the answer to this question- he was tempted to storm in and expose them both, but was finding that his original anger was subsiding in favour of hurt and humiliation- and as much as he wanted to confront Ryan, he also didn't want to be seen crying.
"ME?" he finally answered, "What do YOU intend to do?!" Marissa stopped for a moment, sliding her fingers slowly into her denim pocket, alarming Seth who, all things considered, would never have slept with Marissa in an act of revenge. Much to his relief she removed a small item, but his alarm was justified when she revealed it to be a lighter. "Let's torch them".
Distraught though he was, Seth was forced to conclude that Marissa had outcrazied herself this time, and he stealthily flicked the small magenta container from between her fingers and into the Cohen's pool. Tears now welling in Seth's eyes, he took a final glance at the girl he had loved and the friend he'd considered a brother entwined in one another, before turning on his heel and hurrying inside.
"Where are you going?! You can't let this go!" cried Marissa after him, but Seth neglected to answer.
"Mom, dad!" he exclaimed upon entering the house "come quickly- I think there's an intruder in the pool house!".
