Author's Notes: Okay, who else thought "Beam me up, Mulder" when the chopper lights flashed on Scully? *laughs* I couldn't help it! Anyway, it was obvious that Scully thought the lights were the UFO containing Mulder, as she was rather disappointed when she realized they were from Doggett's chopper. This is my opinion of what went through Scully's mind during those few minutes.

The light appeared from above, shining in her eyes and blinding her to her surroundings. Dana Scully shielded her sensitive eyes with her hand and tried to identify the source of the brightness with little success. For a brief moment, her mind replayed the memory of Cassandra Spender floating toward a similar light source from a bridge on a cold night years before, and her first coherent thought was "Mulder."
As her eyes adjusted to the light, she lowered her arm. Squinting to make out anything beyond the lights, Scully's thoughts again turned to her missing lover. She had come out here in the desert to look for evidence of the ship which held him, not expecting it to find her first. Her heart raced. "Mulder!!" Her heart and mind screamed simultaneously in anguish, though she made no sound. "Please," she mentally pleaded of his captors, "please let him return to me." The beams seemed to move slightly as if in response to her silent request. Her heart picked up speed once more in anticipation.
Before she knew it, the lights moved out of her eyes and the sound of chopper blades reached her ears. Scully's heart sank immediately and she realized it was Doggett coming to find her. She wanted to scream, to cry. She knew she could do neither, and hid it. She knew better than to think it would be so easy to find Mulder. Watching the chopper land and Doggett climb out, Scully sighed internally and resigned herself to keep looking for Mulder. The chopper took off toward civilization, and Scully stared out the window at the desert below her. She would find him no matter what it took. She had to.
Inside the ship, bound to the chair with various instruments of experimentation attached to his body, Fox Mulder screamed at the retreating chopper containing Scully. A tear rolled down his cheek as he screamed her name, begging her not to leave. He knew she couldn't really hear him, but he prayed she would feel him close.
