Chapter 1, Encounter

The rain poured down outside the hospital walls building up into puddles on the roads and streets of Seattle. Derek Shepherd head of neurosurgery sat in his office, dark blue scrubs, strong arms, perfect curled black hair, and a large black watch around his wrist. Staring silently out of the window as stacks of paperwork sat in front of him. He glared back down at the pile of papers that seemed to never stop growing.

"This is so stupid," he mumbled under his breath to himself.

"Dr. Shepherd?" A voice called from behind the office door.

"Come in," he said not glancing up from the sheets lying on top of his desk.

A small intern doctor slipped through the door of his office her hands worriedly shaking.

"Umm..." she muttered out.

He lifted his head to look at her in disbelief.

"Dr. Grey? Aren't you supposed to be doing my post ops, why are you standing in front of me looking like that!?" He demanded in a harsh tone sighing briefly afterwards. Looking down at her feet Meredith started to talk again slowly. "I know I'm on your service today, but I finished the post ops and scan for the patient with a brain tumor, and Dr. Nielsen is removing a clot in OR2 and asked if I wanted to scrub in so I thought..." Meredith trailer off with a shaky voice still not looking up to meet Derek's glare. "Where is Dr. Nielsen exactly?" Derek question in a sharp tone.

"He's scrubbing in right now," she said finally lifting her eyes to meet his glance while he slowly pulled away, standing up from his seat. He walked past Meredith and out the door. She turned and closed the door behind him stepping out into the hallway. "Coming Grey?" He said harshly as he marched down the floor to the elevator and up to the surgical floor.

He stepped in into the elevator with Meredith slowly following behind, walking to the very far back of the elevator shaft to put distance between the two of them. "Dr Grey." He stated, " You will be scrubbing in with me, on this surgery, please inform Dr. Nielsen of this when we reach the OR." He instructed never looking back.

"But-" she started, "No buts, if you want to scrub in tell him if you wish not to then I will tell him myself end of conversation." Meredith opened her mouth to fire back at him, with disrespectful comments on how greedy he was to steal surgeries left and right but soon closed realizing it was not a smart decision. "Yes sir." She spoke softly a harsh tone in her voice, as she rolled her eyes in the back of the elevator.

She stepped out of the elevator following. Derek to the end of the hall before stopping in front of the door. He turned to look her in the eye, "never back talk to your attending, I know the tone," he said sternly locking her gaze into his. He slowly turned and pushed through the OR doors.
