So you think you can dance?
You know when we were young Lissa and I used to enjoy hobbies. Lissa liked singing so we joined the choir, I never signed up for solos but I still remember the songs we sang. But what I looked forward to was dance class. Lissa wanted to do ballet, but not me, I wanted to do hip hop and contemporary. I was actually good at it and as a dhampir I had better endurance and stamina than most.
When I told Dimitri I didn't do any sports while I was away. I lied. I still danced. Lissa would come and try her best but by the time the intermediate class started she'd have to sit down and watch. Through the years Lissa had worked up her own endurance and could pull of some great routines in class, what she excelled in was ballet, I could do some ballet, but found it to prim and proper especially when all I wanted was to go big or go home.
I loved those dance classes, everyone was happy, full of energy and I loved learning new routines. Lissa and I had made friends easily there, even when we moved and found new classes, we always managed to find new friends.
It was a Saturday morning, early when I woke up with a sudden urge to dance. We'd been back at the Academy for 10 weeks now, it was nearly Christmas, and in that time I hadn't danced at all now I thought about it I found my muscles eager to be put through the routines I'd spent hours of tears and sweat learning.
I searched the bond finding Lissa was awake. She'd had a nightmare and hadn't been able to sleep since. So getting dressed in my own gear I texted her.
She said she'd meet me in the gym and as it was early enough we shouldn't see anyone for hours yet. I knew it was against the rules to be up so early but there wasn't ever time to be alone in the gym in normal hours especially with a Moroi.
I snuck out of my room through the window and fifteen minutes later I was stood outside the gym waiting. Lissa emerged in her own dance clothes, black leggings, sports bra, crop top and trainers. I myself was sporting a black dance bra and a long sleeved top that ended just under my bust line, I'd put my black trousers on which were baggy and also had an opening down the sides joining at the hip and ankle. I left my hair down and finished it with my black trainers. As Lissa came closer I also noticed a certain fire user walking next to her.
"You was supposed to come alone, Lis." I huffed as I glared at him. I noticed he wasn't in dance gear so figured he wouldn't be joining us.
"He caught me, what was I supposed to do? Leave him?" She told me entering the gym in front of me. I said nothing as we entered the dark room.
It wasn't locked which was a good thing and as there weren't any lights which meant no one had gotten here before us.
"So a little birdie told me we're here for a secret dance off." Christian sniggered.
I raised my eyebrows at the Moroi as I placed my bag on the bench, like I would with a workout with Dimitri. "You can dance?" I asked him. He laughed shaking his head.
"Not at all, I don't exactly do well at organised fun." His shoulders bouncing as he laughed. Lissa placed her bag next to mine and took a look around.
"I don't think I've been in here before." Lissa looked towards the mirrors against one wall. "We'll need to move some of the equipment." I followed her gaze. Indeed, the treadmills and mats were in front of the mirrors. So with Christians help we cleared the area, giving us a great space. I put some music on while Lissa and I stretched and warmed up.
"Thanks Rose, I needed this today. I can't believe how much I missed this." Lissa said as she stretched her long legs, her hair whipping around her face, she'd tied it in a ponytail at the top of her head.
I started with an easy one. And as Ushers, scream rang loudly through the gym music system Lissa and I put ourselves through the routine we had learned months ago. Lissa was slightly out of breath by the end but pushed for another one, again an easy on Jason Derulo's talk dirty to me.
We moved together, laughing at the end when we got it right. Lissa was breathing even harder now, she hadn't done any working out while we'd been back, so she decided to sit the next one out.
She put a song on the system that surprised me. I looked at her.
"I thought this was your favourite?" I thought she'd want to do it with me.
"It is but I want to watch you first for the steps. I'm unsure." She said taking a sip of water from her bottle.
Lissa re-started Evanescence's Immortal as I moved as elegantly as I could through the moves. The problem with dancing to slow songs was that it was easier to spot mistakes when you did them. But as I moved through the choreography I noticed I'd remembered the moves easily as I tried to put as much feeling into it as possible.
When I finished Lissa joined me and we did it together. When we finished she was smiling, she loved dancing with ballet and though it was contemporary it had a lot of ballet included.
I took a sip of water as Lissa came up behind me.
"You two are great dancers." Christian said as he passed a bottle to Lissa.
"Oh man you should have seen Joe, it was like he didn't have bones. I wish I could move like him." I said as I sat on the ground stretching my legs out on either side of me.
"I forgot about him! He had a crush on Rose." I rolled my eyes at Lissa.
"Joe had a crush on anything with boobs." I told Lissa dryly.
"No he didn't." She rolled her eyes back at me. "It started when you did that Burlesque routine, I think you turned me lesbian for a minute there." Lissa laughed then giggled harder seeing Christians face.
"Calm down their pyro, we never went there." I laughed. As Lissa stopped laughing she caught my eye.
"So Rose any guys take your fancy?" She raised her eyebrows suggestively.
"Nope. I'm a free agent." I said not looking Lissa in the eye, I hated lying but what would I say? I have a crush on my mentor, on my teacher?
"There has to be someone Rose? Mason?" She suggested.
"Nah, I love Mason but I don't think he'll be anything other than my friend." I shrugged. As Christian looked at me like I was causing someone pain.
"Poor Mason, forever in the friend zone." He held a hand over his heart as I shook my head.
"Dude he's like my brother! I grew up with him!" I punched him lightly on the arm as I stood.
"No, no guys for me, anyway I won't have time soon as I'll be your kick ass guardian." And secretly lusting over my partner.
We decided on a bit of black eyed peas next, Lissa stopped not even a quarter of the way through leaving me to dance to the time by myself. I liked the fast routines the most, I liked the energy you had to use to throw yourself into the positions. I looked in the mirror during a move and nearly faltered when I saw Mason sat with Lissa and Christian watching me. I pushed them out of my mind as I finished the routine, it was bad enough that Christian had been here let alone Mason. He'd rib me for ages now.
I finished as Centuries by fall out boy started. Still choosing to ignore my friends I threw myself into the next routine. I knew why Lissa had out this on one. It was one of my favourites. I'd learned two routines to this one, one was a capoeira routine that I performed with Joe back in Portland. That one was great as it was full of flips and twists and we dance fought together. And though he wasn't here with me I put myself through the routine like he was, flipping and twisting like he was about to attack me.
When I finished I finally felt slightly out of breath. I let Lissa choose the next one, but instead of a routine we'd learned she wanted to dance with Christian and urged Mason to join me.
"I didn't know you could dance Hathaway?" Mason said as he put his hands around my waist.
"There's a lot about me you don't know Mase." I told my red headed friend. A love song from glee started as I gave Lissa the stank eye.
"Glee really Lissa? Was that really necessary?" My blonde haired friend giggled, deciding I couldn't do the slow dance thing I took charge placing my right hand around Mason's waist and taking his left in my right hand.
"You don't mind being the bottom right?" I winked as I led him across the floor ballroom style. I was shorter than Mason but I still managed to steer him true. He stumbled a bit, having not danced before, but I kept my grip firm but strong as I made him move into the positions I wanted to. From behind me I heard Lissa laugh.
"Do you always have to take the lead Rose?" I laughed back at Lissa, she was right as there was normally more girls than guys in dance class so I ended up being one of the guys. I suppose it took a special type of guy to lead me.
It was nearing breakfast time as we finished up. I told the guys to carry on I had to finish putting the equipment away and though they offered to help I told them I could do with the alone time. I was lost in my thoughts as I stretched slightly. Stretching had always felt good to me, like it was unlocking my body.
I wasn't even paying attention as the song changed to unchained melody. The first thing I noticed that I wasn't alone was that some of the lights went out leaving only the one I was under on plunging the rest of the room in darkness and music. I spun around trying to see who was here, I heard them before seeing them, footsteps echoing slightly through the gym. Then I felt arms wrap around my waist. I smelt him, his aftershave and I knew his touch. Dimitri.
He turned me gently to face him, he placed a hand around my waist, copying what I had done to Mason earlier. His eyes like molten chocolate they were so hot as he stared at me. He steered me across the gym, looking at me the whole time. His warm hand on my naked back sending goose bumps across my body as we moved. He moved closer to me, I could feel his breath on me as I got drunk on his scent.
Dimitri led me like we'd been dancing together for years. I felt like I was gliding rather than dancing with him. All too soon the song stopped. We stared at each other, neither one out of breath from exertion but from the close proximity to each other.
We stood close together neither one talking, we still hadn't said a word to each other and yet we were saying a million things.
What felt like an hour later but in reality was seconds the song changed. The spell was broken as Tenacious D started singing about fucking a girl gently.
"Thanks for the spin Comrade." I said as I took a step back, a smile spread all over my face as Jack Black sang the chorus again. Dimitri's face was a mask like usual.
"I can't say I agree with your choice in music." He finally said as Jack asked about positions.
"Hey Tenacious D are a gift from me to you, it's about time you had some musical education." I smiled at him. I was so happy that I couldn't keep the smile off my face, I felt on top of the world because Dimitri had just danced with me. "You know I've never danced with someone without fighting for the lead. Where did you learn?" I was eager for more information on the god that is Dimitri Belikov.
"I grew up with 5 women in the house and as the only male I had to partner up a lot." I could just imagine a young Dimitri being bossed around by sisters.
"Well thank you Comrade, it was great to dance with you." I thought maybe I should leave, I don't have the greatest track record with keeping control over my hormones and after dancing with Dimitri my hormones were in over drive.
"Where did you learn Roza?" I stopped moving and looked into his eyes. I didn't answer is question straight away.
"Been dancing since I was a kid. How long were you watching for?" I asked slowly as Dimitri gave a small smile.
"Why do you think the door was unlocked, I was in the office when you started. I was up in the viewing platform." He indicated to the raised seats on a platform. Oh man he would have heard everything.
"You have a burlesque routine?" His eyes twinkled at me, his guardian mask gone completely leaving him full open and looking as beautiful as ever.
"Maybe." I smiled seductively. I knew we were heading down a forbidden path, but the forbidden was so fun, no wonder Eve took a bite of that damn apple, rules were boring.
"I'll have to ask for a show sometime."
"Make sure it's a private one, don't want more crushes to start." His hand reached for me as I heard the outer doors open.
"See you around." I told him moving away I knew he was looking at my butt, there was no way he wasn't. So I added a little sway as I grabbed my bag and moved towards the doors not saying anything else as I left my fantasy boyfriend alone.
