The Ink

Running like blood,

Defined by pen

Lines on a page

lifeless, not real.

Lines that show,

record, tell

history remain alive.

History, not life.

The ink records events impartially,

no feeling,

indifference,

Faces become forgotten.

The ink records battles, battles.

Are humans stupid?

Feelings of hate and arrogance

We are better than them.

Something new,

Log of a soldier

View of a soldier

I am the soldier.

I am among other soldiers,

Outside, I am smiling,

friendly, outgoing.

Inside, my indifference has not left.

This is the 49th .

One year,

two years, pass,

the 49th began to change.

I no longer

could tell

was my smiling face a lie?

or not?

Soldiers became friends.

I began to care,

began to believe

I was one of them.

A thoughtless moment,

A sudden outburst,

He

saw my change.

Don't be taken in by the war,

I taught you to be nothing

more than an onlooker

regardless of the situation.

We're not their allies,

we are only on their side by chance,

only involved to record history

we have no need for hearts.

Pain, Torn,

duty to my clan?

or

stand by my friends?

Stabbed in the heart,

forced to decide.

They are not just ink,

not anymore.

Random Notes: The lines in italics are near quotes from the manga. The first two come from Lavi and the long one is from Bookman. There was just something about the line "ink on top of paper" that made me want to write this.

Disclaimer: I do not own Lavi or Bookman. D. Gray-man is not my creation, that right belongs to Katsura Hoshino.
