My first phanfic. Ok-ok, it's maybe a cliché, but I wanted to do something short for first. For those who didn't know, handfasting, which appears at the end of the story is a traditional European ceremony.

Masquerade...paper faces on parade...masquerade, hide your face so the world can never find you.
It was all over. She gave him the biggest thing he could ever hope for: a kiss on his mouth. Even his own mother denied to touch him, the wretched monster, the repulsive carcass he was. And this delicate, fragile girl, this pure Angel showed him: he was not alone.
But now it's over. He let her go with that boy... to see her happy. He just couldn't hurt her anymore. She was so good to him, and he made her life a nightmare with his lies, deceiving and songs in her head. He had to free her from this madness. For her sake.
And him? He should receive now what he deserves, by Fate's own hand. Spending the rest of his life in solitude... maybe it wouldn't be so hard, after all he lived alone almost his entire life. But without the voice of Christine... only the memory of it...her...
...he felt his heart froze at this thought. Ice hardened his insides. No more warmth... forever winter. So be it.
While he was pondering, he didn't realise that the cave was rather silent. No sound of a boat departing, taking the young lovers to a bright new life. No songs of requited love. he was so busy with bitter thoughts that he didn't hear the footstepts either.
Suddenly, in the doorwas stood an apparition.
Christine.
Beauty and innocence radiated from her little figure. Oh God, she was so perfect. Her wedding dress was soaking wet where it met with the underground lake's cold water, when Christine waded into it to reach him. On her delicate finger shone Erik's ring dimly in the dying candlelights.
And on her head, there was the wedding-veil.
Erik's heart skipped several beats. Has he died already? Can a monster like him reach Heaven in the end? Or is it just a revelation that will disappear so quickly as it came?
But none of these were proven true. Christine walked to him, and when she arrived, she reached for his hand without hesitation. Erik, still believing he's just in a dream or in Heaven, took it. Then she gently pulled him up... Erik stood with trembling knees before her.
Christine I love you...
He managed to whisper hoarsely. She smiled and him kindly..honestly. With one hand, she still held Erik's, in the other, a plain white ribbon appeared, shaping a bow by a double knot. With a quick move, she tied it around their entwined hands. Altough, the bow was still too loose. Christine searched for Erik's eyes, which were staring incredulously at the ribbon. Some tense seconds went by. Then finally their eyes met, and he understood: it was his turn now.
He never wanted anything more in his life... he always craved for love, for his Angel... and now he could get them both.
With one, firm move he fastened the tie around their hands.
Note: Handfasting is a traditional European ceremony of betrothal or wedding.
