Just a little ficlet born from a conversation with Miralys, because the end pairings of Song Of The Lioness could never really work out...

disclaimer- Tamora Pierce owns all.
Thayet is the perfect queen. You know she is, you knew she would be the moment you saw her. She was beautiful, of course, still is, the loveliest person you have ever seen, but that wasn't how you knew. She has this quality, impossible to describe, a sort of instinctive royalty, which cannot be learned. You saw this instantly, and you knew she should be queen.
She is intelligent and kind, and the two of you look impressive in front of crowds. She has learned all the laws and customs of her adopted country. She has bourn, is bearing, your children, your heirs, scions of the Conte line.
And in a way you love her for it, you can't help it. You could never have married her if your wedding vows did not contain at least a grain of truth.
So yes, you love her, just a little, and she is royal and commanding and kind. All this is true, but the best thing about her, the thing which makes her perfect is that she never mentions the nights when you absent your self from the room you share, on the nights when a certain copper-haired warrior returns to the city.
She pretends not to notice, and the rest of the court follows her lead, ignoring secrets smiles and clandestine meetings. Your secret romance can be held in plain view.
Sometimes you wonder if you made a mistake in marrying her, in trading passion for duty, but then you look at her and you can't regret it. She is the perfect queen.
And if she and the lawful husband of your copper-haired beauty occasionally exchange looks of complete understanding, if her new baby really looks nothing like you at all, if a child with your blue-black hair and sapphire eyes is being raised as the son of the Lord and Lady-Knight of Pirate's Swoop, who is there to complain? All the children of questionable parentage will be raised to be happy and healthy. You will always have your passion, your violet-eyed beauty, and your country will have the perfect queen.
